AREA SCENE: Morningside hoop tourney set for January

The annual Morningside Youth Hoop Tournament will be Jan. 9 through Jan. 11 on the campus of Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. Each team is guaranteed three games in pool play with the pool winners advancing to the championship round.

Entry fee for fourth- and fifth-grade teams is $70 and for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade teams is $95. The first eight teams in each grade division to get their rosters and entry fees submitted will have priority.

To enter a team into the tournament, mail your roster with uniform numbers, your e-mail address, and your entry fee to: Jim Scholten, Morningside College, 1501 Morningside Ave., Sioux City, Iowa, 51106.

Rock Valley to host basketball tournaments

The Rock Valley, Iowa, Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the annual Rock Valley Youth Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments. The girls tournament will be held

Feb. 27 and Feb. 28 and the boys tournament is slated for

March 6- 7.

The tournament is for boys and girls teams in grades 5-8. There will be a maximum of 12 teams in each age group for boys and girls.

All teams will be guaranteed two games and teams may use players in a grade lower to complete their roster. The roster must however, be comprised primarily of the grade in which the team is entered.

The registration deadline is Feb. 13, 2009 for girls teams and Feb.20, 2009 for boys teams. Early registration is important to guarantee a spot in the tournament. When a division is filled, teams will be placed on a waiting list. Teams that are unable to complete their roster now should send in the application form and entry fee immediately in order to reserve your place in the tournament and send in roster information before the tournament weekend.

The registration fee is $100 per 10-player team with a $4 fee for each additional player over 10 on or before the deadline or $120 after the deadline.

Kid Rockers basketball camp Dec. 13

South Dakota Mines and the Hardrock Club will be hosting a Kid Rockers basketball camp Dec. 13.

The camp is open for boys and girls grades K-6 who want to have fun and learn how to get better at the game of basketball.

The camp will be run by Mines players and coaches at Goodell Gymnasium on the Mines campus from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Emphasis will be on fundamental skills, strengthening shooting form, ball-handing and moves to score.

The cost is $25 per Rocker, $40 two kid Rockers from the same family and $50 three kid Rockers from the same family.

Campers will receive a Kid Rocker t-shirt, a Kid Rocker basketball, free admission to regular season Hardrocker basketball games and a chance to perform at the Mines vs. Grace College game on Dec. 13.

Cougar Classic set for Dec. 6-7

The 14th Annual Rushmore Honda Cougar Classic basketball tournament for boys and girls grades 4-8 will be held in Rapid City on Dec. 6-7.

The entry fee is $135 per team with a three-game guarantee.

The deadline to entry is Sunday, Nov. 23.
