RAPID CITY - As curtain calls go, Rapid City Post 22 pitcher Mike Robinson couldn't have asked for a better send-off than Wednesday's 2-0 American Legion baseball win over Pierre.
Robinson, a fifth-year player likely making his last start at Fitzgerald Stadium, dominated Pierre, limiting Post 8 to just two hits, thanks largely to masterful use of his four-pitch repertoire and a hustling Post 22 outfield.
"I asked the guys last night to give me a lot of effort, go out there and leave it on the field, because I sure was going to," said Robinson, back for his final year of Legion ball after taking the mound for D-I South Dakota State last spring.
"I really think they did what they could. We didn't have any errors. Everybody was ready to go and played hard. You can't ask anything more than that," Robinson said.
Rapid City rebounded from a 5-1 loss the previous night to the same Pierre team and a dominating performance from their ace, Mike Gardner.
But this one belonged to Robinson and Post 22.
"Mike wanted to go out on a high note, and he really did," said Post 22 coach Dave Ploof. "He really dominated the ballgame and threw quality pitches from the beginning.
"It was a two-hit shut-out," Ploof said. "Just a beautiful job."
But Pierre starter Kyle Cichos was plenty stubborn as well, holding Post 22 to four hits and striking out five.
"We knew he was more than capable, and that's what he showed us today," said Post 8 skipper Jim Iverson.
"We're actually pleased with the way we played, although nobody likes to lose," Iverson said.
"It's hard to win when you only get two hits."
Rapid City got all of its scoring in the bottom of the sixth.
Sam Wolfe doubled to start the inning and advanced to third on a passed ball that just got by catcher Jordan Heckenlaible.
Zach Vlietstra's infield hit plated Wolfe, and Alex Niemann single later scored Vlietstra.
"We got the timely hits there at the end and got the win," Ploof said.
None of Pierre's three base runners made it past first base.
Brian Graves was stranded after drawing the only walk issued by Robinson in the third frame.
Jason Livermont singled in the fifth, but was picked off by Robinson's throw to first-baseman Blaine Linster.
Alex Lauseng, aboard on an infield hit in the top of the seventh, was also nabbed at second when Robinson detected the move and threw to Linster, who relayed to shortstop Garrett Wolff for the out.
"I've always been lucky to have a pick-off that guys typically don't see coming," Robinson said. "Really, the biggest thing today was the defense with everyone playing hard."
Heckenlaible's ground-out two batters later ended the game and also his own 20-game hitting streak.
Pierre, 40-12, hosts Huron Friday for its regular season home finale, before coming back to Rapid City, this time to face Post 320 on Saturday night.
Pierre then has a week off before hosting the South Dakota State American Legion tournament, starting on Aug. 8. Post 22, 43-19, starts play in the regular-season-ending Marshall Tubbs Classic today at Fitzgerald Stadium.
The Post 22 Split Squad opens play against the Billings (Mont.) Royals at noon, followed by Aberdeen vs. Colorado Springs, Colo., at 2:30 p.m.
Casper, Wyo., meets Spearfish at 5 p.m. with Post 22 vs. St. Louis, Mo. at 7:30 p.m.
