RAPID CITY - Kati Scholten successfully defended her title and led Brookings to its fifth team title in six years - and third straight - during the final round of the state Class AA girls high school golf tournament Tuesday at the par-72 Meadowbrook Golf Course.

Scholten was one of two players to break 80, posting a tournament-low 1-under-par 71, which gave her a 12-shot victory with a two-day total of 2-over 146. She started her round birdie, par, bogey before rattling off 14 straight pars. Scholten closed out her high school career by birdying the par-5 18th hole for the second consecutive day.

"Well, I actually didn't hit it very well today, compared to yesterday, but I just made up-and-downs from a bunch of different places," Scholten said.

Scholten, a senior, won the title by two shots in 2006, but said she enjoyed this year's title run even more, referring to it as "bittersweet."

"Yeah, Kati played exceptionally, especially shooting 71 on the second day of a state tournament," Brookings head coach Bill Scholten said. "As a coach and as a parent, I'm very proud of her - just to perform like that, being her senior year."

In the team race, the Bobcats fired a 327 in the second round, giving them a 643 total. Sioux Falls O'Gorman put four players in the top 11 and took second at 687. Rapid City Stevens claimed third place with a 705, Pierre came in in fourth at 720, and Sioux Falls Washington shot 723 and ended up in fifth.

Junior Paige Osterloo tied for fourth for the Raiders, while sophomore Taylor Smalley led Pierre with a sixth-place finish.

"You know, I thought we played fabulous," coach Scholten added. "We didn't quite play as well on the front with some of our players, but we sure came back on the back nine. As a two-day combination, that (643) is a great score for this golf course."

Brookings had three other players place in the top 14. Sophomore Morgan Fitts shot a second-round 81 and took third with a 160. Bobcat freshman Ashley Hendricks, the first-round leader, carded an 87 and wound up in a tie for fourth at 161, and eighth-grader Dani Selberg rounded out the scoring with an 88, putting her in a tie for 14th at 179.

Stevens head coach Phil Hunt seemed pretty satisfied with the Raiders' third-place finish.

"There were a few tough holes out there, but I think it was true with everybody," he said. "As dominant as Brookings was, and O'Gorman certainly didn't leave any opening, so for us to get past Pierre and stay ahead of Washington, it was a very good tournament for us."

The Pierre squad was also happy with its finish.

"We were aiming for the top 5," Pierre head coach Rob Davis said. "We had a phenomenal first day - we shot the low score (344), ever, for a Pierre girls team. Obviously, we didn't play very well the second day, but we achieved our goal. So, that's what we were after."

Individually, Washington junior Chelsea Cadwell finished runner-up for the second straight season. She posted a 3-over 75 Tuesday and ended up with a 158 total.

Osterloo's tie for fourth included a second-round 81, which left her with a 161 total.

"It wasn't that great, but there are better days out there," Osterloo, who also took fourth in 2006, said.

Smalley followed up her opening-round 76 with an 89, giving her a 165 total.

A pair of Knights found their way into the top 10, with Molly Donohue and Steph Berger taking seventh and eighth, respectively. Donahue had an 83 and posted a 166 total, and Berger wound up at 169.

Huron's Megan Entwisle was ninth at 171 and Watertown's Kali Gottsleben (93) took tenth with a 175.

Sturgis senior Jessica Lauer was the Scoopers' top finisher, coming in tied for 11th with Sioux Falls O'Gorman's Katie Benedict and Whitney Wheeler. Lauer's 87 gave her a 176 total.

Locally, Sturgis (385-371-756) took eighth. Spearfish (422-450-872), Rapid City Central (476-508-984) and Douglas (519-522-1,041) took 15th-17th, respectively.

Vanessa Hamaker led the Spartans with a 47th-place finish. She shot 100, 101, for a 201 total. The Cobblers got a 202 from Stephanie Stryker, putting her in 48th. Brooke Schafer led the Patriots, taking 66th with a 215.
