STURGIS - Sturgis Post 33 split a doubleheader with Mitchell Friday night, bouncing back in the second game to defeat Post 18, 11-1, in six innings after dropping the first contest 9-3.

In the first game, the teams were tied at two runs each going into the third inning when Mitchell took the lead and limited Post 33 to four hits the rest of the way.

"We didn't swing the bats very well," said Sturgis head coach Nic Ewing. "We made too many errors and had no intensity."

Sturgis rebounded in Game 2, getting a dominating pitching performance from Cassidy Huffman and scoring nine runs in the final two innings to get the win.

Huffman pitched a two-hitter against Post 18 and at one point, retired eight batters in a row.

"Huffman had one of the best pitching performances we've had this season," said Ewing.

Post 33 gave Huffman some offensive help as Nick Pickett finished with a double and a single and Trevor Potts came away with a couple of hits as well.

"I was very pleased the way our guys responded to what we said in between games and how they answered," said Ewing.

"We had five or six guys go to the cages and work on hitting in between games. We did the little things right in the second game and we were able to play aggressive baseball because of that."

Sturgis (3-2) entertains Pierre in a doubleheader Thursday night at Strong Field.

It's Fill-the-Park night with free admission to both games.
