SPEARFISH - Spearfish Post 164 wore out the bats Wednesday afternoon at Black Hills Power Stadium, sweeping a doubleheader from Sheridan, Wyo., Post 7, 10-0 and 17-2.

Spearfish (5-10 overall) won each game by virtue of the mercy rules. The first game ended in five innings because of the 10-run rule, and the second in four innings by virtue of Spearfish's 15-run lead. And, in rather unusual fashion, both games ended dramatically with a walk-off, game-ending double.

In the opener, centerfielder Jordan Johnson struck the decisive blow to end the game with a fifth-inning double to left field, scoring teammate Justin Kemp, who started the rally with a two-out single. Rick White provided the game-ending heroics in the nightcap driving in the decisive run with his third hit of the game, a double over the left fielder's head that allowed the winning pitcher, Allen Hemeyer, to score the winning run.

Spearfish's pitching was solid. In the opener, Cody Rosenau stifled the Sheridan bats, tossing a two-hitter. After a leadoff single to begin the game, he did not allow another hit until the fifth and final inning. A potential threat there quickly ended as Rosenau induced a grounder to short, which the Spearfish defense turned into a 6-4-3 double play. Rosenau, who lost a one-hitter in Yankton over the weekend, kept the Sheridan hitters off-balance throughout.

"I was just throwing fastballs mostly," Rosenau said. "I'm not a great strikeout pitcher so I work hard at hitting my spots. I've pitched better, but today it was good enough."

The offense provided Rosenau with an early cushion, scoring four runs in the second inning off singles by Dustin Wisener, Rick White and Justin Kemp sandwiched around a couple of Sheridan errors. A two-run single by Ryan Royer in the third and a two-run double by Wisener provided additional support leading up to Jordan Johnson's game ending double in the fifth.

The second game was effectively over in the home half of the first as Spearfish sent 14 batters to the plate, banged out seven hits and scored 10 runs. The big blow in the inning was a Jess Cooper three-run home run into the teeth of a stiff breeze blowing in from right center field.

"It came off the bat really well and was well hit," Cooper said.

Spearfish enlarged the lead in the second on one of Justin Kemp's three hits and scored three more in the third before Rick White's fourth-inning final heroics. Both Kemp and White had three hits in the game, and Cooper added a single to his first inning homerun.

Hemeyer got the win, allowing only two runs on four hits, while striking out three.

Spearfish coach Matt Kemp was pleased with what he saw coming off a tough weekend tournament in Yankton.

"We played good baseball in Yankton and ended up losing three one-run games. Today was a chance to get the frustration out and get back on track."

Spearfish travels to Sturgis on Friday night for a game at 7 p.m.
