Lacy Stevens picked up her teammates midway through the first game and Edgemont went on to a three-game sweep over Rapid City Christian on Tuesday night at Roosevelt Gymnasium on the National American University campus.
The Moguls, ranked ninth in the Class B poll, improved to 19-2 on the season with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-14 win over the Comets.
The match started out slow with neither team being able to settle in and generate any consistency on the court, as there were numerous errors by both squads.
With the game tied at 8, Stevens ignited a 5-0 Mogul run with her serving that helped Edgemont gain the advantage in Game 1.
"I'm not really sure why we didn't come out with any intensity," said Edgemont head coach Randy Stevens. "We had a ton of mental mistakes early and were not prepared to play."
The Moguls got off to a much better start in Game 2 as the tallest player on the floor, Liz Humiston, a six-foot senior, made her presence felt at the net with some timely hitting and blocking as the Moguls broke on top 6-1.
The scrappy Comets battled back to close to within 8-5 before Stevens started getting the ball fed to her. Stevens did not disappoint as she showed off her prowess of putting the ball away.
The 5-5 sophomore with springs tallied six of her game-high 13 kills, including the game-winner as Game 2 went to the Moguls.
"Lacy has a great work ethic in practice. She knows the game and she plays hard," said the elder Stevens, Lacy's father.
In the third game, the Moguls started to display why they are ranked among the Class B elite.
"We started moving our feet better … we got after the ball better, got some nice digs and set our hitters," coach Stevens said.
The Comets just couldn't put together any runs and started to wear down against the taller Moguls.
Laura Corbett had a pair of kills and a couple of aces as the Moguls closed out the match.
"We have a new group of girls playing volleyball this year," said Christian head coach Juliana Tomek, who is in her third year at the school. "I love our effort and the way we competed. Edgemont is a good team and we battled, and that is all I can ask."
Kristi Porter had three aces, Humiston and Corbett had five kills with Jayme Manke dishing up 22 assists for the winners.
Christian was led by Valerie Graumann's three kills and four blocks. Niki Romeyn had 11 assists with Emily Zietlow contributing two aces for the Comets.
Edgemont will travel to Crawford, Neb., on Thursday before hosting the Panhandle Conference Tournament on Saturday.
Things won't get any easier for Christian (2-17 overall) as the Comets travel to play No. 10 White River on Thursday.
