BIG NIGHT: Cavaliers set two school records in win over Lead-Deadwood.
DEADWOOD - Zach Cimburek ran for four touchdowns; Jared Jacobson threw for a pair of scores and St. Thomas More set two new school records in a 55-0 blanking of Lead-Deadwood in the Golddiggers' home opener on Friday evening at Ferguson Field,
The defense limited Lead-Deadwood to a negative 16 yards rushing and negative two yards passing, setting a new school record for fewest yards allowed (minus 18).
Kevin Robb, a junior kicker, set the other record on a 45-yard field goal in the closing minutes of the first half. Dusty Nowotny held the previous school record of 44 yards.
"It was a vast improvement from last week," said St. Thomas More coach Wayne Sullivan. "The biggest thing was our intensity. We keep telling the team if they hustle good things will happen. Our defense flew to the ball."
More opened the scoring in the first quarter when the Lead-Deadwood quarterback was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety.
The first of four touchdown runs by Cimburek, an eight-yard TD, upped the Cavs' lead to 8-0 with 5:43 left in the fist period.
The defending Black Hills Conference champions then capitalized on two Golddigger turnovers. Cimburek struck paydirt from three yards out and Jacobson connected with Conor Casey on a one-yard touchdown pass.
On the final play of the quarter, Cimburek found the end zone from 1-yard out, extending the Cavs' lead to 30-0.
Malcom Guest hauled in a touchdown pass from Jacobson on More's initial possession of the second stanza. Field goals of 35 and 45 yards by Robb gave the visitors a 43-0 halftime lead.
Cimburek scored on a 5-yard scoring run in the third quarter.
However, the conversion kick attempt failed. Nevertheless, More ended the game by the mercy rule in the final quarter on a 10-yard touchdown by Tyler Kok.
More's defense held Lead-Deadwood to one first down in the game. The 'Diggers' lone first down came with 18 seconds left in the first half.
On the offensive side of the pigskin, the Cavaliers rushed for 176 yards and passed for 75 yards. Cimburek accumulated 60 yards on the ground. Senior classmate Jeremy Kudrna added 57 yards. Jacobson completed six of 11 passes.
More (2-0 overall, 2-0 Black Hills Conference) hosts Douglas on Friday in matchup of early-season unbeaten teams in the conference.
Lead-Deadwood (0-2, 0-1) visits Hill City in a non-conference game Friday.
