SIOUX FALLS - On the opening night for high school football in the state, the Sioux Falls O'Gorman Knights put a 40-7 thumping on the Spearfish Spartans in the first game for both Greater Dakota Conference teams.
O'Gorman's 38-game win streak ended last November, but its dominance of West River schools - and every other team in the state other than Sioux Falls Roosevelt, for that matter - continued on in this one-sided win.
Exactly how one-sided was it? Well, the Knights led 33-0 at half, with a fumble at the Spearfish 1-yard-line and a few missed PATs all that stood between them and being up by 40 points at half.
"We have a lot of speed back there," said O'Gorman junior Will Powell, who ran four times for 41 yards and a touchdown in a contest in which the Knights rolled up 292 yards on the ground. "I thought tonight everything went pretty well. The line did a good job - there's some inexperience there, but we had some holes we took advantage of. We're going to be fast all year."
