Area Scene: Meade school district offers free athletic physicals

The Meade School District is offering free athletic physicals at Massa Berry Clinic on July 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Dakota Hills Family Practice on July 22 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the Sturgis Medical Center on July 29 from 10 a.m. to noon.

All students in grades 6 through 12 who are planning on participating in any extra-curricular activity must have a physical before the first practice.

The first Sturgis boys' golf and girls' tennis practices are Aug. 10. The first football, volleyball, cross country and dance and cheer practices are Aug. 17.

BHSU to host golf tournament: Black Hills State University is hosting the 19th Annual Gold Dust Yellow Jacket Golf Tournament on Saturday at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club in Spearfish. Proceeds from the golf tournament will be used for scholarships for student-athletes.

Registration and a putting contest will be at 7:30 a.m. at the country club, while the $250,000 Gold Dust Shoot-out begins at 8:30 a.m., and the 18-hole scramble with a shotgun start beginsat 9 a.m. The awards ceremony and social will be at 1 p.m.

The entry fee is $100 per player and includes 18 holes of golf, use of a cart and a chance to participate in the Gold Dust Shoot-Out. There are numerous hole prizes and team awards for multiple divisions including men's, women's, mixed and senior divisions will be awarded. The tournament is limited to the first 144 golfers to register.

After the golf tournament, the Gold Dust Yellow Jacket auction will be at the Donald E. Young Center with the doors opening at 5 p.m., and the auction beginning at 6 p.m. Admission is free for golfers and $10 for non-golfers. Appetizers and beverages will be served.

The auction features a variety of items including gift certificates to local restaurants, a digital camera, a barbecue for 20 with the BHSU tailgate trailer and certificates for golf at various venues through the region.

Little League event to help John Thomas: Canyon Lake Little League is hosting Fund on the Field to benefit John Thomas who has been a volunteer and coach for Canyon Lake for more than four years. The money raised through a silent auction, raffle and other events will help Thomas as he battles colon cancer.

There will be live music, food, fun and entertainment at Canyon Lake Little League on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Blue Hawk coaches to host volleyball camp: Former Dickinson State University volleyball coaches Dave and Kay Moody will direct their 19th annual volleyball camp at Fryburg Elementary School, which is nine miles west of Belfield, from noon on June 30 to July 2 at noon.

This year's smaller camp is for those athletes entering grades 6 through 12. Players will be separated by grade, age and ability level and will be able to choose a positional camp, regular camp or all-skills camp. There are no meals, commuter and resident options for this camp, and prices range from $65 to $120 per camper depending on the option chosen.

This year's camp features 15 hours of instruction, tie-dye camp T-shirts, a camp booklet, individual player evaluations, a skit night, a camp store, awards, prizes and competition.

Match play championship deadline nears: The deadline to enter the SDGA Men's Match Play Championship and the SDGA Women's Match Play Championship is Wednesday. Entries are available online at www.sdga.org.

The Men's Match Play Championship will be July 9 through July 13 at the Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion. The Women's Match Play Championship will be July 10 through July 13 at Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls. For more information, call the SDGA at 605-338-7499.
