FORT PIERRE - Points were hard to come by in the District 12A first-round game between Stanley County and Mobridge on Tuesday. But the Lady Buffs scored enough for a 35-23 win at Parkview Gym.
The 58 total points scored is fewest ever recorded in a Lady Buff postseason contest. The 23 points by Mobridge is also a new defensive record for the Lady Buffaloes in a tournament game.
Only three players scored for the Tigers, who made only eight field goals in the game and was 4-of-12 from the free-throw line.
"We struggled offensively, and they chipped away," Stanley County coach Tom Rogers said. "The key for us was they controlled the tempo. We wanted to get up and down the court, but they really slowed the pace. We exerted a lot of energy on defense."
Stanley County defeated Mobridge 46-29 on Feb. 8 and were heavy favorites in the rematch against the 5-13 Tigers. The Lady Buffs never trailed in the contest but were never able to put away Mobridge.
The Lady Buffs led by 12 points early in the fourth quarter, but Mobridge was able to cut the margin to seven at 29-22 with just under four minutes to play. But the Lady Tigers would score only one more point the rest of the game.
"We came out slow, but our defense kept us going," said Sam Ostarello, who scored eight points and had eight rebounds for the winners. "But we have to look to score.
"When you're double- and triple-teamed, you have to look to pass."
One offensive highlight came early in the third quarter when Ostarello stole the ball and scored on a breakaway layup. The basket represented her 1,000th career point. Ostarello becomes the fourth Lady Buff to have 1,000 points in a career and the first as a junior.
