Canyon Lake, Harney win, Rushmore eliminated, at tourney

RAPID CITY - Canyon Lake and Harney both picked up wins Wednesday at the North Dakota/South Dakota District I Little League Baseball tournament at Dave Collins Field.

Canyon Lake prevailed in a pitcher's duel over Rushmore 3-0 to stay alive while Rushmore was eliminated.

Harney sailed into the championship round with an 11-1 win over Spearfish in a battle of unbeaten teams.

All of Canyon Lake's runs came in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie.

Leadoff hitter Alex Winter reached on an error and after a walk to Jake Ferdinand, Newt Johnson then singled in Winter. Bryce Mitzel followed with a two-run single to score both Ferdinand and Johnson.

Ryne Lees picked up the win for Canyon Lake while Bryce Ashland took the loss.

Rushmore stranded two base runners in the second and two more in the third.

Ashland, Dominic Bradford, Mike Shaw and Kyle Wehrle all had singles for Rushmore.

Tanner Simons and Johnson both went 2-3 for the winning Canyon Lake team.

Spearfish took an early lead in the first inning over Harney on a home run by Ryan Hamilton.

Harney tied the game in the bottom of the inning and then broke things open in the third frame by piling up seven hits on the way to a six-run inning.

Jake Lewis had a double in the third inning and a 2-run home run in the fourth to lead the Harney All-Stars.

Cole Holzer added a two-run shot in the fifth to end the game.

Jake Sullivan went 3-3 and Caden Holzer was 2-3 for Harney.

Wayde Meyers picked up the win while striking out eight Spearfish batters.

In another elimination game tonight at the Canyon Lake Complex, Spearfish will take on Canyon Lake at 7:30. The winner of that game will then face Harney in the first championship game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

If a second game is needed it will be played Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The champion will then advance to the Midwest Regional in Indianapolis on Aug. 3-11.
