VERMILLION - Noah Shepard threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Dan Skelly on the first play of the game and South Dakota routed Culver-Stockton College, 70-7, on Saturday.
Shepard tossed three touchdown passes, all to Skelly, and left the game after halftime having thrown for 180 yards. Dante Warren, who led the Coyotes (2-2 overall) in rushing with 108 yards, relieved Shepard at quarterback and passed for 71 yards.
Warren also ran for two scores, one a 60-yard breakaway that staked the Coyotes to 14-0 edge midway through the first quarter.
Skelly finished with four catches for 137 yards. He caught two 10-yard scoring passes to help USD take a 42-0 lead at the half.
South Dakota finished with 727 yards of total offense, including 474 on the ground.
Sir Oliver Turner caught an 11-yard pass from Justin Gumm with 56 seconds to play for Culver-Stockton (0-3). It was the first points of the season for the Wildcats, an NAIA team from the Heart of America Conference. The Wildcats have been outscored 115-7 this season.
Culver-Stockton had 49 rushing yards and Gumm and Dustin Jacoby combined for 197 passing yards.
SIOUX FALLS 30, HASTINGS 17: Sioux Falls jumped on Hastings College quick but Hastings battled the rest of the way in a 30-17 Sioux Falls victory.
Ryan Lowmiller scored on runs of 34 and 5 yards to give the Cougars a 14-0 first quarter lead. With 6:42 left in the half, Bronco QB Dayton Edwards found Maurice Mansfield for a 60 yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-7 at halftime.
Sioux Falls took charge again in the 3rd period, scoring on a 74 yard pass from Lorenzo Brown to Alex Anderson and a safety after a Hastings fumble in their own end zone.
MINNESOTA-DULUTH 40, AUGUSTANA 10: In a battle between Minnesota Duluth's high-powered offense and Augustana's stingy defense, Minnesota Duluth came out on top, downing Augustana 40-10 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday afternoon at Howard Field.
Minnesota-Duluth, which entered the game ranked 15th in the nation, remained unbeaten at 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the NSIC. Augustana evened its record at 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
UMD, the top-ranked scoring offense team in the NSIC at 43.3 points per game, wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard against the Vikings, which featured the league's top scoring defense at 12.3 points per game. The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff 80 yards in 13 plays for a touchdown.
Dakota St. 33, Mayville St. 13: Andrew Fatten rushed for 251 yards and three touchdowns as Dakota State defeated Mayville State, 33-13, in a nonconference game between teams from the Dakota Athletic Conference.
Fatten carried 24 times and scored on runs of 10, 10 and 6 yards for the Trojans (2-1 overall). He helped Dakota State roll up 377 yards on the ground against the Comets (1-2). Mayville State was held to just 9 yards rushing and 186 total yards.
Donald Strand and Kyle Young both threw touchdown passes for the Trojans.
Mayville's T.J. Stanford tossed two touchdown passes to Ollie Gentry in the second half. Gentry had six catches for 129 yards.
