SPEARFISH - Rapid City Stevens demonstrated why it is rated No. 1 in the state Class A wrestling rankings, as the Raiders swept three dual matches at the Spearfish Quadrangular on Thursday.
The Raiders defeated Spearfish 64-9; Lead-Deadwood 75-6 and Hot Springs 61-12.
Stevens had 10 wrestlers win all three of their matches - Jarrick Jensen, 103 pounds; Morgan Russell, 112; Brian Gilbert, 119; Kyle Becker, 125; Kris Klapprodt, 135; Kramer Johnson. 140; Jarrett Jensen, 145; Matt Bury, 152; Nick Jensen, 189; Kyle Benne, 285.
"Our kids are wrestling really well," Stevens coach Brian Moser said.
"We're peaking at the right time. Our wrestlers are doing the little things. They are paying off for us."
Hot Springs won its other two matches 56-20 over Spearfish and 65-9 over Lead-Deadwood. Cole Romey at 130 pounds and Dustin Fischer at 171 pounds won both of their matches for the Bison.
Lead-Deadwood edged Spearfish 31-30 in a matchup of short-handed teams.
The Golddiggers won four of the six contested matches. Josh Thompson (130) and Richard Norton (171) recorded wins by decision. Riley Norton (160) and Justin Rogers (189) were pin winners for Lead-Deadwood. Seth McFarland (103) and Bryce Lewis (140) won by fall for the Spartans.
"Hot Springs and Rapid City Stevens are tough teams," Lead-Deadwood coach Jamie Maine said. "We expected our kids to wrestle well. For the most part, they did."
Lead-Deadwood had only six wrestlers suited up for Thursday's night competition.
"Coach (Mike) Abell made a good call for us in our dual with Spearfish," Maine said.
"We bumped some kids around to get better matches. It worked. "Without Justin Rogers' pin, we don't win the dual.
"I'm really proud of our kids the way they worked and improved."
"Both Hot Springs and Rapid City Stevens are tough teams," Spearfish assistant coach Jesse Boyer said. "I hoped we could have won two more matches against Stevens at 112 and 119 pounds.
"The Lead-Deadwood match could have gone either way. We matched up with them well weight wise. They won the coin flip and got the odd numbered match." Ryan Harrison won by forfeit at heavyweight.
"It's the little things with a young team," Boyer said.
Nick Bierschenk and Kyle Ringwood were the two Spartan seniors wrestling in their final home competition. Bierschenk won all three of his matches.
Spearfish and Stevens compete in the Greater Dakota Conference tournament in Sturgis Saturday. Lead-Deadwood and Hot Springs compete in the Black Hills Wrestling Classic in Lead on Saturday.
