RAPID CITY - The Post 320 Stars wrapped up one of the most successful seasons in team history Saturday afternoon by sweeping a twinbill from Wheatland, Wyo., 12-11 and 14-6 at Pete Lien Field in Rapid City.
The two wins left the Stars with a 41-12 record heading into this week's 3A Regional in Pierre.
In the opener, Post 320 scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Chris Lindemann, who had singled, stole second and moved to third on a ground out, scampered home when the Wheatland (41-14 overall) pitcher John Daly threw the ball to the backstop as he attempted to intentionally walk Kyle Starkey.
The unusual outcome was perhaps a fitting conclusion to a bizarre final two innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Post 320 had seemingly put the game away, breaking a 4-4 tie with a seven-run inning during which it recorded one hit, a three-run home run by Adam Carroll. Post 320 scored the first four runs courtesy of four walks and a hit batsman by Wheatland pitchers.
The seven-run lead wasn't enough. In the seventh inning, Wheatland came back to tie the game, scoring seven runs on six hits with all of the runs scoring with two outs.
Only Lindemann's heroics, and a wild pitch, saved the day. Nate Jacobson also had a couple hits in the game and Brad Winkelman added his eighth homer of the season in the second inning.
Spencer Braun, who followed Stars starter Tyler Jones, and reliever Bryon Olson, got the win.
The second game was much easier for the Stars as Lindemann doubled on the first pitch and singles by Starkey, Cimburek and Carroll quickly plated two runs. Lindemann scored again in the second, following his second double of the game, Nate Jacobson drove him in with a line single to right field.
The Stars scored two more runs in the third as Reed Rice celebrated his 19th birthday by stroking a run-scoring single. He would later score on an error.
Wheatland tied the game, 4-4, in the fourth as Stars reliever Jared Jacobson struggled to find the strike zone, allowing four runs without giving up a hit.
The tie was short-lived, however, as Post 320 erupted for seven runs in the fourth on five hits. The big blows were a base clearing three-run double by Nate Jacobson and a two-run dinger by Cimburek, his 10th of the year.
Carroll got the win allowing one run on two hits, and four strikeouts in his three innings of work.
"Adam has been hurt," said Post 320 head coach Jim Brandt. "This is the first time he has thrown a ball in about 10 days. He looked a little rusty today, but we think he'll be OK."
