Post 22 improves to 4-0 at Gopher Classic

MINNEAPOLIS - Rapid City Post 22 continued its winning ways with a pair of victories at the American Legion Gopher Classic on Saturday to improve to 4-0 in the tourney and 39-15 overall.

Post 22 turned back Richfield, Minn. 10-2 in the opener in a game that lasted only five innings. The Hardhats then needed nine innings to topple Excelsior, Minn., 6-5 in the nightcap.

Post 22 banged out 13 hits in the five-inning win over Richfield as Sam Wolff scattered three hits to pick up the win.

Zach Vlietstra, Blaine Linster, Justin Sawyer, J.J. Martin and Parker Sullivan all had two hits for the winners. Sullivan, playing third base with Wolff on the mound, also knocked in three runs.

Alex Niemann had a big impact in Post's second win of the day as he belted a two-run home run and he then came on to gain the win in relief pitching 2-1/3 perfect innings.

Niemann fanned four of the seven hitters he faced.

Rapid City jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before Excelsior tied it with a couple of runs in the fourth inning.

Post 22 grabbed the lead back with a two-run fifth, but the Minnesota team battled back with two runs in their last at bats to force extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth, Rapid City pushed across the winning run in the top of the ninth.

Vlietstra had three hits, including two doubles and scored twice from his leadoff spot while Linster singled, doubled and scored three runs.

Robinson struck out a season-high 12 batters while allowing two earned runs.

Excelsior had eight hits against the two Post 22 hurlers, but they were all singles.

There were eight errors in the game as both teams committed four apiece.

Post 22 will have another pool play game today against Adrian, Mich., at 1 p.m. MT.
