AREA SCENE: Two golfers qualify during Day 1 of $100,000 shootout

RAPID CITY - Two golfers advanced to the semifinals of the WDT-YMCA $100,000 Hole-in-One Shootout during action Wednesday.

Thoe two golfers will compete in Saturday's semifinals along with anyone else who qualifies Thursday and today. Golfers can hit qualifying shots from 3 p.m. to dark at LaCroix Links, 830 E. Minnesota St., Rapid City. Shots in the qualifying rounds will be sold for $3 each or four for $10. Tickets are available at Western Dakota Tech, 800 Mickelson Dr., Rapid City, and at LaCroix Links

Through the qualifying rounds, any participant who makes a shot within a predetermined distance from the hole will qualify for the semifinals Saturday morning. The top five participants closest to the hole during the semifinals will go on to the final $100,000 Shootout held at 1 p.m. Sept. 13.

The funds raised from the $100,000 Shootout will support the WDT Foundation and its scholarship programs for WDT students. WDT is the only technical institute that serves the western South Dakota region. WDT offers more than 20 programs in a variety of fields, including Business, Construction Trades, Health Services, Human Services, and Manufacturing and Mechanical Trades. More than 95 percent of WDT graduates are placed in careers within six months of graduation, and more than

88 percent live and work in South Dakota.

The $100,000 Shootout is made possible by the generous support of local organizations and businesses, including Coca-Cola and Golden Hills Resort.

SDM Hall of Fame inductees announced

RAPID CITY - The South Dakota School of Mines Hard Rock Club has released the names of the 2008 Hardrocker Hall of Fame Inductees.

Joe Corbett (football), Derek Knapp (men's basketball), Lisa Zacher (all-around), Mark Huber (track and cross country), Jack Hunter II (coach) and the undefeated 1951 Hardrocker football team will be among the 2008 induction class.

The honorees will be inducted Oct. 4 during the Hall of Fame Banquet in the Christensen Hall of Fame Room at

PRCA announces hiring of Karl Stressman

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association announced Thursday that longtime Western industry leader Karl Stressman has agreed to join the PRCA as president and Chief Executive Officer of PRCA Properties and interim CEO of the PRCA.

Stressman has been involved in rodeo and the Western industry for more than 20 years. For the past 12 years, he has been director of event marketing for Wrangler Jeans and Shirts. In that capacity, Stressman has worked closely with the PRCA in promoting the sport of rodeo, including the "Tough Enough to Wear Pink" campaign, which Stressman co-founded as a result of his wife's successful battle with cancer.

"The Association is thrilled that Karl has accepted this position with the PRCA," said chairman of the board Keith Martin. "He is a strong leader who knows our sport and has the respect of people throughout our industry. He has dedicated his career and life to the Western way of life, and I am excited to work with Karl to continue the progress the PRCA has been making on behalf of our members."
