SPEARFISH - What a difference a day makes.
Only 24 hours after losing to the Wyoming All-Stars by four points in overtime, the South Dakota All-Stars avenged that defeat with a convincing 76-61 victory in the Lions Club Girls' All-Star game at the Young Center on Tuesday.
"Just effort," South Dakota head coach Doug Durfee, who coaches the McCook Central girls during the school year, said about the difference between Monday night in Gillette, Wyo., and Tuesday in Spearfish. "Just effort and intensity. We played great defense tonight, and on offense, we had the floor spread and hit cutters and open shots."
Rapid City Central standout Jami Morris, who is heading to Northern State in the fall, was named the game's most valuable player after registering a game-high 20 points including three 3-pointers. Considering there were four Division I recruits on the floor at times - Parker's Abby Plucker (North Dakota State), Sioux Falls Roosevelt's Jennifer Schuttlofel (South Dakota State), Pierre's Sierra Moeller (Boise State) and Cheyenne Central's Hillary Carlson (Wyoming) - the most valuable player award carried some weight with it.
"It was a really great win," Morris said of coming back and getting a split out of the two-game series.
"I think the reason that we won was because we've got a lot of really great girls on our team. All of them were amazing and
Durfee agreed.
"These girls are all all-stars, no doubt about it," he said.
He was pleased with the way they adjusted and came together on such short notice.
"We definitely saw some of our flaws from last night," Durfee said. "We came back today and had a great practice this morning and carried that over to the game."
The extra day to gel was big in Morris' mind as well.
"It helped tremendously," Morris said. "Within 48 hours, we came together as a team and really played well. After the loss last night we really came together."
we played hard."
