RAPID CITY - Rapid City Post 22 blew its seventh-place game with West Warwick, R.I., open with a six-run second inning to close out the Elks Firecracker Invitational with a 10-0 win in five innings at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday.
Rapid City got another strong pitching performance from Kolton Emery, who allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked none in a complete game.
"He's a young boy but he really knows how to hit his spots," Post 22 head coach Dave Ploof said. "He's got three good pitches and he can throw them with consistency. He really threw the ball well for us today."
Post 22 scored on a Jordan Mette groundout in the first inning, but really got to West Warwick starter Brendan Murray in the second. Steven Ficken led off the inning and was hit by a pitch before Jarrett Jensen singled him to third base. Kyle Singer grounded to first base and West Warwick's first baseman went home to get Ficken, but the right fielder slid under the catcher's tag to make it
2-0.
After a John Jarding bunt single loaded the bases, Parker Sullivan drew his team-leading 34th walk of the season to score Jensen. Mette followed with a two-run RBI down the right field line to make it 5-0 before Sam Wolff hit a double to right to score Sullivan and Mette and end the inning at 7-0.
"We did a good job of staying back on the ball and hitting it hard," Ploof said of the inning. "We weren't out in front chasing pitches early. We were more patient."
The win put Post 22 at 3-5 at the close of the tournament and West Warwick finished 1-7. The Rhode Island team struggled in the tournament, but in a sign of the competitive balance lost on a walk-off grand slam to Fort Collins, Colo., in the ninth inning earlier in the tournament. The Fort Collins team played Cheyenne, Wyo., on Sunday night in the championship game.
"We finally got some good defense, good hitting and good pitching and finally put it all together," Ploof said of the win. "This was a fantastic tournament with a lot of good ballclubs and you learn by playing good competition day-in and day-out."
Post 22 is now 21-22 on the year overall and West Warwick fell to
9-14.
The game was over when …
Post 22 sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored six runs on four hits in the second inning to make it a 7-0 game.
Steve Ficken was hit by two pitches in the inning as Post 22 chased West Warwick starter Brendan Murray after the inning.
The outburst gave Emery more than enough of a cushion as he rolled to his seventh win of the year (7-3).
Sunday's MVP:
Emery threw five innings of shutout ball, allowing four hits, striking out seven and walking none, Mette went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
