ORANGE CITY, Iowa - In a battle of two of the premier NAIA Division II players, Northwestern College's Deb Remmerde got the best of South Dakota Mines and its star Melanie Vedvei in the Red Raiders' 107-104 overtime victory on Saturday over the Hardrockers.
Remmerda dropped in 50 points as Northwestern overcame a 54-40 halftime deficit.
Vedvei, Mines' fourth all-time leading scorer, scored 32 points while adding 10 assists.
The two played the entire 45 minutes.
Mines had a 70-55 lead with 14 minutes left to play in regulation.
Crystal Algood's two free throws with 6.4 seconds left sent the game into overtime.
The Hardrockers shot a sizzling 58 percent from the floor while Northwestern went a stellar 16-of-34 from the 3-point line to get back into the game.
Remmerde canned 10-of-13 of her 3-point shots.
Jennie Malone, a senior from Rapid City, dropped in 25 points, with Jerika Ihnene adding 19 for Mines, now 6-2 on the year.
Amy Larson added 18 and Algood netted 13 for the winners.
Remmerde was the Player of the year in 2006 and is a three-time NAIA Division II first-team All-American, also went over 3,000 career points in the game.
Vedvei was a first team selection last year and a second team nomination in 2006.
Northwestern (9-0) was ranked fifth in the latest NAIA polls, while the Hardrockers were 16th.
Mines plays at the University of Sioux Falls today, while Northwestern hosts Black Hills State.
