The 87th rendition of the Deadwood Days of '76 Rodeo drew to a close Saturday night and by virtually all barometers, this year's version was an unqualified success.
"It really did run smoothly for us this year," Pat Roberts, the longtime rodeo chairman of the event, said. "Working with great people helps to make that happen and our committee made this year's rodeo all that I could hope for. We had great performances every time out, and perhaps most importantly, we didn't have any serious injuries to either our participants or to out animal athletes, which is always a very important consideration to people who love rodeo."
The rodeo saw an increase in attendance for all performances, according to Days of '76 committee president Mac Meyer.
One contributing factor was the decision to scrap the Sunday performance and go with two performances on Saturday.
"Our Saturday evening performance was far better attended than our Sunday afternoon shows of the past," Meyer said. "People were more relaxed and seemed to be enjoy themselves more not having to worry about how soon they have to leave and get to work the next day."
The action in the arena had a little something for everyone, featuring top cowboys like Trevor Brazile, J.W Harris, Clint Cannon and Tyler McDaniel.
For fans of South Dakota cowboys and cowgirls, there were standout performances by Sturgis' Tyler Haugen, who won the steer wrestling event.
"We just had a great rodeo this year," Meyer said. "I can't thank the 'Days of '76 committee and all of the volunteers for making this event run so smoothly. You would probably have to go to the National Finals Rodeo to see one better."
