Bethany Holyoak and Jerika Ihnen got South Dakota Mines going early as the Hardrockers rolled to an 80-48 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph on Saturday in the US Bank Thanksgiving Classic at Goodell Gymnasium.
Holyoak and Ihnen combined for 13 of the Hardrockers’ first 16 points as Mines jumped out to a 16-5 lead after the first seven minutes of the game. Holyoak led all players with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Ihnen chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds. The duo also combined for three blocked shots and a couple of steals. Freshman Hillary Hawkins also had 13 points on a perfect 4-for-4 effort from the floor.
“We had more discipline tonight and our intensity level was totally different,” Mines head coach Barb Felderman said of her team’s effort after dropping a game to Mount Mercy on Friday. “We just came out with a different mindset. There was more energy.”
The Hardrockers’ different mindset showed through on the defensive end as they held the Crimson Wave to 32.6 percent (15-for-46) shooting and forced 26 Calumet turnovers.
“We were more tenacious tonight,” Felderman said.
Mines led 42-22 at the half and was never threatened in the final 20 minutes as the Hardrockers pushed the lead up over 30 points. All nine players who dressed for Mines saw at least 16 minutes of action and scored at least four points.
Three different players scored 10 points to lead Calumet. Lydia Aceviz, Joselyn Gray and Lisa Upshaw were the only Crimson Wave players to crack double figures in scoring.
The Hardrockers (5-5 overall) will be off until Thursday when they travel to Spearfish to take on arch-rival Black Hills State at 5:30 p.m. at the Young Center.
“Black Hills is very, very good,” Felderman said of the Yellow Jackets, who picked up a couple of wins over Mount Mercy and Calumet College in the Thanksgiving Classic. “They’re pretty deep and they’ve got a lot of different players who can do a lot of different things. We’re going to have to put together a good game.”
