Wrestling: Stevens grapplers win Mitchell team crown

MITCHELL - Rapid City Stevens won three individual titles en route to the team title at the Jerry Opbroek Invitational wrestling tournament in Mitchell on Saturday.

The Raiders finished with 163 points. Wagner finished runner-up with 145-1/2, followed by Winner with 116 and Sturgis in fourth with 102-1/2 points.

"Wagner is No. 1 in class B; they have a really balanced team from top to bottom. We had several close matches with them," Stevens head coach Brian Moser said.

"Our kids really won some close matches today to put us on top."

Chris Klapprodt won a close match over No. 1-ranked Daniel Koupal of Wagner to claim the 135 title.

Matt Bury (152) and Anthony Groziano (285) each claimed titles in their respective weight classes.

At 130, Taylor Rave, a senior, was not seeded heading into the tournament, but knocked off the No. 1 seed in the first round to move to the finals. Rave finished second.

Morgan Russell (112), Jarrett Jensen (145) and Nick Jensen (189) each took second place.

Jarrick Jensen took third at 103 and Justin Zaiser finished fourth at 171.

Rapid City Stevens will compete in the East-West Duals in Pierre on Saturday. Sturgis, R.C. Central and Stevens will represent the West while Pierre, Yankton and Watertown will be the East schools.
