Cavaliers finish 2007 with shutout win in championship game
ABERDEEN - Annie Bloom and Maria Gonzalez combined for seven goals as St. Thomas More-Rapid City Christian blanked Harrisburg 7-0 to claim the 2007 State A girls Toyota Cup on Saturday.
The Cavaliers completed a perfect 12-0 season with the win.
This is the third state championship for the St. Thomas More-Rapid City Christian girls, who also won in 2002 and 2004.
Bloom, a senior, opened up the scoring in the 13th minute with an assist from Cassie Roost.
Gonzalez, a sophomore, scored her first and second goals, including a header goal off a Bloom corner kick, to put the Cavs up 3-0 at the half.
"We broke the curse," said St. Thomas More-Christian head coach Doug Noyes.
"We have had undefeated seasons in the past only to lose in the championship game."
Bloom again opened the second-half scoring with back-to-back goals in the 71st and 72nd minutes with Maria Gonzalez and Katie Kusser providing assists. Gonzalez then wrapped up the shutout win with a goal in the 80th minute on an assist by Bre Habbe, and a final unassisted goal in the 88th minute.
"I have to attribute our successful season to our defense and how they kept the other team from getting off very many good shots," said Noyes. "The defense really didn't let Harrisburg threaten much today either.
"We played the width of the field, and they let Maria Gonzalez in. You can't do that because she will score."
St. Thomas More-Christian defeated Sioux Falls Christian and Groton earlier in the tourney.
The Cavaliers scored an impressive 69 goals for the season while allowing only eight.
