BROOKINGS - Mike Brummer continued his dominance of the South Dakota Golf Association Men's Senior Championship.

The 58-year-old Rapid Citian won his fourth-consecutive title Sunday at the par-72 Brookings Country Club, making him the winningest male golfer in South Dakota history. It was Brummer's 14th career title and he is tied with Sioux Falls' Anne Borgmann for the overall lead.

After opening with a 1-under-par 71, Brummer carded a 4-over 75 in the second round to win by three with a 2-over 144 total. But, it wasn't easy.

Brummer began the day with a 4-shot lead over six golfers, including eventual runner-up Jack Stephenson, of Rapid City. However, after six holes, Stephenson opened up a three-shot lead and looked poised to take care of business.

"You know, Pat and I talked about going out and not trying to attack it, and that's not my style," said Brummer, referring to his caddy Pat Lockwood, a member at the Club. "I got out of my element trying to play conservative, and I shouldn't have done it. It almost cost me."

Stephenson tied things up on the 314-yard, par-4 second hole when he made eagle and Brummer carded a double-bogey.

Brummer also doubled the sixth and suddenly Stephenson was three ahead. But, Stephenson struggled to open the back nine, bogeying Nos. 11-13 to drop to two shots back. Brummer then birdied the 14th to go up by three and then parred out.

After playing the first six holes in 4-over, Brummer played the final 12 holes in 1-under.

"You know, this is a hard one," Brummer said. "I don't know, you've got to get beat sooner or later and for a while I thought it was just meant to be this year. And, thank God I came back.

"These get harder as they go, because we're getting better seniors in there."

Stephenson (74) finished at 149 and Sioux Falls' Greg Kendall (75) had a 150 total.

"I put one in the hole on No. 2 for an eagle," said Stephenson. "I did well, I got it to 3-under and just let it slip. I had three bogeys in a row, but then I finished strong. About the last five holes, I was all over it again.

"If I would have putted well - I missed four or five putts of five feet or less."

Even though he didn't win the title, Stephenson was still pretty excited about earning some hardware.

"It was a fun round; this is a great place," Stephenson added. "It's good. I'm really excited. I've been playing golf for 40 years and this is nice. I've never gotten a trophy for a state am."

Rapid City's Doug Murphy and BCC member David Kosbau both shot 75s and tied for fourth at 151.

Brookings' Dean Hofland (81), who tied for second in the third flight, won the over-70 title.

Flight winners include: Rapid City's Craig Weber (sixth flight), Bill Bacon (seventh) and Mike Richards (eighth), Pierre's John Knox (third), Scotland's Dick Fawbush (second), Scotland's Dean Rettedal (fourth), Redfield's Terry Mason (fifth).

Notes: Brummer has won five mid-amateurs, four seniors (four consecutively is a record), two match plays, two two-mans and one senior two-man … Brummer teamed with Lockwood to win the SDGA Two-Man Championship this summer on June 14-15 at Red Rock Country Club … Brummer has a chance to become the first player in state history to win three SDGA events if he is victorious in the Senior Two-Man, which is Sept. 19-20 at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls. Brummer said he will not play in the Senior Two-Man if he qualifies for the U.S. Senior Championship.
