Basketball: Hardrockers improve to 5-1

FREMONT, Neb. - No. 16 South Dakota Mines picked up another win at the Midland Lutheran Classic on Saturday, downing the host Warriors 87-58 in a women's college basketball game.

Mines led 24-22 with 5:31 remaining in the first half, but went on an 18-9 run to go up 42-31 at halftime. Midland Lutheran narrowed the lead to eight early in the second half, before Mines ran away with it.

Amber Deweerd led the Lady Hardrockers with 21 points. Reserve Jerika Ihnen added 17 points and eight rebounds, while Jennie Malone, playing in her second game of the season, tallied 16 points, seven assists and four steals.

All-American guard Melanie Vedvei added 13 points on five-of-seven shooting, while Stephany Bjustrom notched 13 points before fouling out.

Both Deweerd and Vedvei made the all-classic team.

The Warriors got a double-double from Allie Rippe (12 points and 11 rebounds), while Karmen Jericevic led the scoring with 22 points. Jericevic made the all-classic team.

Mines committed only 10 turnovers for the game while forcing 20, 11 of which came on steals. The 'Rockers also held a 47-41 rebounding edge and out-shot Midland Lutheran 41.3 percent (31-for-75) to 36.7 percent (18-for-49).

South Dakota Mines, which won a 92-91 thriller over No. 7 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) on Friday, improved to 5-1 on the season. The Lady Hardrockers play at Northwestern (Iowa) on Friday and at the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday.
