RAPID CITY - Rapid City Stevens has a chance to clinch the Greater Dakota Conference high school volleyball title this week when the four Class AA Sioux Falls schools head west for matches, but the Raiders have bigger things on their mind.

"Well, to be honest, we're not as concerned with the GDC title as we are about our position when it comes to the state tournament in November," Stevens head coach Josh Lien said. "If we happen to get (the GDC title), that's nice, but it's not our ultimate goal - (which is) to succeed at state.

"In the games this weekend, we want to make sure our game is as high as it can be, and go from there."

Stevens (22-8 overall) is leading the GDC with an 8-1 record. Sioux Falls Lincoln is second at 8-2, and Sioux Falls Washington and Sioux Falls Roosevelt are tied for third with 7-3 marks.

All of that could change this weekend.

On Friday, Rapid City Central and Sturgis take on Roosevelt and Sioux Falls O'Gorman in Sturgis, and Stevens and Spearfish play Lincoln and Washington on the Spartans' home floor.

Action moves to Rapid City on Saturday, with Central and Sturgis playing Lincoln and Washington at Naasz Gymnasium, and Stevens and Spearfish matching up with Roosevelt and O'Gorman at Carold Heier Gymnasium.

Central has been playing well as of late, moving its season record to 11-19 overall and 3-6 in league play, which puts them in fifth.

"Right now, we're really excited about the way we're playing," Central head coach Leslie Weber said. "The girls are playing well, and they know it, and they want to keep playing that well."

Sturgis (4-11, 3-6 GDC), O'Gorman (2-8 GDC) and Spearfish (1-12, 0-7) are in sixth through eighth, respectively, in the conference.

When West River and East River met up on Sept. 7-8 in Sioux Falls, the hosts came out on top, winning 12 of the 16 matches.

Stevens went 3-1, beating Washington 3-0, O'Gorman 3-1 and Lincoln 3-2, and dropping a 3-1 match to Roosevelt.

"We got by, by the skin of our teeth against Sioux Falls Lincoln," Lien said. "That could have gone either way when we went out there."

Sturgis got the other win, bettering O'Gorman in five games. The Scoopers got swept in their other three matches.

The Spartans suffered four consecutive sweeps, while the Cobblers went five games with Washington and O'Gorman, and also suffered a pair of sweeps.

Central is hoping to improve on its performance.

"We're excited to come back out - we're a whole new team now - and we want to show them we can compete," Weber said. "We're trying to win some matches, not only for confidence going into the playoffs, but for seeding points."

Spearfish host Stevens and Sturgis hosts Central on Monday to wrap up conference play.
