Allen returns favor for late model win

Danny Allen wasn't about to let a little sheet metal keep him from a victory late Friday night at Black Hills Speedway.

Deadwood's Scott Anderson sought to add to a heat race win by nudging his way past Allen for the lead going into the last lap of the feature.

But Allen was having none of it, sacrificing the right-side bodywork on his No. 7 Fastrak Late Model by leaning on Anderson's No. F16 through the final two turns to regain the lead and claim the winner's purse.

"I wasn't about to give up $800," Allen said. "Tin is tin, but $800 is better."

Belle Fourche's Clint Anderson completed a heat race and feature sweep of the Black Hills Racing Series 360 Sprint car division card, out-distancing Jacob Ossenfort and Aaron Wendt of Rapid City. Dave Olson and Mike Sires rounded out the finishers.

Last week's winner, Matt Heinzerling, of Belle Fourche, retired his No. 22 early.

The Late Model and Sprint Car features were completed after the Journal's news deadline.

Other feature winners included Troy Murner, of Rapid City, (BHRS Grand National Stock Car), Allen Locken, of Gillette, Wyo., (Wissota Midwest Modified), Mike Stadel, of Rapid City, (Wissota Super Stock) and Tony Leiker, of Gillette, (Wissota A-Modified).

SDSU's baseball tourney run comes up short

Tournament most valuable player Johnny Roberts drove in five runs, including a grand slam, and Andre LaMontagne pitched a complete game to lead top-seeded Oral Roberts to a 6-2 victory over South Dakota State in the final game of the Currington Mortgage Summit League Baseball Championship Saturday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

ORU, which won its 12th consecutive conference tournament, improved to 31-13 overall. The Golden Eagles will advance to NCAA regional play next week.

The third-seeded Jackrabbits ended their season at 26-30 overall.

Oral Roberts took a 1-0 lead right off the bat, scoring in the top of the first inning. Tyler Garewal was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Roberts' base hit up the middle. Garewal also scored the Golden Eagles' second run of the game in the fifth inning.
