Sturgis' Kyle Kopplin battled through cold, windy conditions at Spearfish Canyon Country Club on Monday to win the Greater Dakota Conference boys' golf meet with a score of 79 over Sioux Falls Lincoln's Jordan Haeckel and Roosevelt's Grant Wynia.

While Kopplin won the individual portion of the event Sioux Falls O'Gorman (341 strokes), Sioux Falls Washington (344) and Sioux Falls Roosevelt (345) were the top three teams, followed by Sturgis (35), Rapid City Stevens (354), Sioux Falls Lincoln (357), Rapid City Central (387) and Spearfish (399).

Sturgis' Clay Kopplin (83) and Stevens' Shane O'Brien (84) were the other two area golfers to finish in the individual top 10. Stevens' Blake Beebe (87), Sturgis' Tate McVay (90) and Stevens' Josh Newman (90) finished in the top 20.

The area teams will be in action again Thursday at the St. Thomas More Invitational at the Elks Golf Course in Rapid City. That event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

RED CLOUD WINS REGION MEET: The Red Cloud Crusaders topped off an undefeated regular season with the Region 4A boys' golf championship Monday at Belle Fourche Country Club.

The Crusaders shot a 354 as a team to better Lead-Deadwood by 39 strokes in blustery conditions. Red Cloud's Dallas Greenwald and Tristen Long tied with the best scores of the day at 83, but Greenwald won the one-hole playoff to be named the Region 4A medallist.

"It was a miserable, cold and windy day," Belle Fourche head coach Clark Gusso said. "Golfers battled the weather all day."

The scores showed the difficulty of the conditions, as only five players broke 90 on the day. Red Cloud's Montana Sierra shot an 85 to give the Crusaders three of the five players who broke 90. The other two players to shot less than 90 on the day were Hot Springs' P.J. Wetzel (85) and Custer's Johnny Couch (87).

Red Cloud and Lead-Deadwood both qualified for the Class A state tournament as a result of top-three finishes, but the third team was in doubt as Custer and St. Thomas More each finished with team scores of 394. By rule, the two teams took place in a one-hole, sudden-death team playoff. The Cavaliers bettered the Wildcats 23 to 27 to secure the third and final state tournament team berth. The top 20 individuals also qualified for the state tournament in Madison Oct. 5-6.

The Black Hills Conference tournament will be Monday at the Belle Fourche Country Club at 10 a.m.
