AREA SCENE: Junior golf lessons offered in June and July

Rapid City Stevens golf coach Phil Hunt will teach junior golf lessons at Fountain Springs Golf Course for ages 7 through 17 in June and July.

Beginner lessons will be from

8 a.m. to 10 a.m. each day followed by instruction from experienced players from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The lesson dates are as follows: Session 1 is on June 10, 16 and 17; Session 2 is on June 23, 24, 30 and July 1; and Session 3 is on July 7, 8, 14 and 15.

Drillers hold off the A's for the win

The Drillers scored nine runs on nine hits in a 9-8 victory over the Valley Green A's in a Black Hills Amateur baseball game on Thursday night.

Corey Feickart went 2-for-5 from the plate with an RBI for the Drillers. Travis Burhans hit 1-for-5 from the plate with three RBI; Kyle Starkey went 2-for-5, and Nori Matsushita 2-for-4. Winning pitcher Zac Soetkmilk threw a complete game giving up only eight runs on 15 hits.

Jay Merrigan went 4-for-5 at bat with three RBI and a home run. Blaine Williams hit 3-for-5 and Eric Swenson went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Dean Hansen handled the pitching duties for the A's.

Three area drivers post wins at Oahe Speedway

Three Rapid City area drivers posted wins during Oahe Speedway's Memorial Day weekend of NHRA drag racing.

Wade Johnson defeated Darcy Madsen, of Rapid City, in Saturday's No-Box Shootout finals, while Carly Ellingson beat Bonnie Fuchs, of Bowman, N.D., in the Junior Dragster finals.

Other Saturday winners were Chad Uhrig, of Pierre, (Box Shootout) and Philip Pease, of Pierre, (Trophy Shootout).

Monday's Pro Class finals saw Rick Meier, of Box Elder, defeat Lance Trujillo, of Gillette, Wyo. Shawn England, of Pierre, added a second win of the weekend in the Bike/Snowmobile class, outrunning Johnson in Monday's finals.

USD basketball team to play Nebraska twice

Head men's basketball coach at the University of South Dakota Dave Boots, has announced that the Coyotes will play the University of Nebraska in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.

The first game is set for

Nov. 12, 2010 at 7 p.m. in Lincoln, Neb. The second meeting will take place on Nov. 11, 2011 in Lincoln.

Yellow Jackets' Albers named AD of the year

Black Hills State's Jhett Albers has been voted the DAC Athletic Director of the Year by his peers in the conference.

Albers was named the Yellow Jackets' athletic director in January of 2006. He also teaches for the physical education department and is the head volleyball coach. Albers led the Yellow Jackets' volleyball team to a share of the DAC regular season title, the conference tournament crown and the school's first trip to the national tournament.

Albers played football at Black Hills State while earning a bachelor of science degree in education and graduated with a master's degree from Black Hills State in 1991.

During the just completed academic year, the Yellow Jackets shared the conference championship in volleyball and won outright conference titles in men's and women's cross country, men's basketball, women's indoor and outdoor track and field and women's golf.

The Yellow Jackets finished second to Dickinson State for the DAC Commissioner's Cup. Black Hills State also took part in national competition in men's and women's cross country, volleyball, men's basketball, women's golf and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field.
