Douglas remained undefeated in the Black Hills Conference, but needed all five games to get past Newell on Thursday night in a volleyball match between the two conference foes.
The Patriots rolled to two easy wins 25-11,
25-14 before the Irrigators made things interesting by winning the next two games 25-21, 25-23.
Douglas then prevailed in the all important fifth game, 15-10.
"We were rolling the first couple of games," said Douglas head coach Jeff Nugent. "Newell really came to life. I think our experience and teamwork helped us in end to pull out the win."
"Overall the team played very well," said Newell head coach Teresa Pittman. "Douglas might have intimidated us at the beginning a little bit. The girls settled down and started to play some pretty good volleyball."
Douglas had 28 service aces in the match as Christina Scheler had seven aces with Chelsea Edwards and Jordan McCausland adding six apiece.
"We have been serving the ball very well as of late," said Nugent.
Kelsey Schwartz had 11 kills with Edwards adding eight.
Maranda Baragar and Haley Wrigglesworth combined for 32 digs for the winners.
Newell (18-12 overall) will entertain Custer and Douglas (15-7 and 12-0), will host their own invitational at Whitehead Auditorium on Saturday.
JONES COUNTY WINS TWO IN KADOKA: Jones County picked up a pair of wins at the Kadoka Area Triangular on Thursday in high school volleyball.
The Coyotes defeated Kadoka Area, 23-25, 25-18, 25-10, 25-15, and then dispatched New Underwood, 25-13, 25-17, 25-16.
In the other match, New Underwood downed Kadoka Area, 25-20, 25-17, 25-13.
Jones County, (11-11 overall) will play in the Sully Buttes Invitational on Saturday.
Kadoka Area (4-19) will play Little Wound on Saturday in Kyle and New Underwood (17-11) has a week to prepare for Wall on Oct. 24.
SUNDANCE, Wyo. 3, MOORCROFT, Wyo. 0: Sundance downed Moorcroft, 25-8, 25-15, 25-12, in a battle of Wyoming I-90 neighbors on Thursday night in Sundance.
The Bulldogs were led by Kelly O'Connor, who had 10 kills, nine assists and three blocks.
Kylie Hughes added six kills and nine digs, with Laramie Noyce contributing six kills and 12 digs for Sundance.
The Bulldogs improved to 5-2 in the conference with the win.
OELRICHS 3, RAPID CITY CHRISTIAN 2: Oelrichs picked up a hard-fought 22-25, 25-22, 21-25,
26-24, 15-13 victory over Rapid City Christian in prep volleyball action Thursday night.
Oelrichs (5-11 overall) travels to Edgemont on Monday and Rapid City Christian (4-18) hosts Bennett County on Tuesday.
CRAWFORD, Neb. 3, EDGEMONT 2: Crawford, Neb., overcame an early deficit and defeated Edgemont, 25-16, 15-25, 17-25,
25-21, 15-11, in volleyball action Thursday night.
"I'm not sure what happened," said Edgemont head coach Randy Stevens. "We had them down 8-1 in the fourth game and gave up the points to them. I don't think my girls have figured out that they have to play every single ball like it's game-point ball."
Chyla Koller was 28-of-29 serving with two aces and had 10 kills to lead the Moguls, while teammate Liz Humiston finished with eight kills and an ace.
Edgemont (20-6 overall) travels back to Crawford, Neb., on Saturday for the Panhandle Conference Tournament beginning at 10 a.m.
