RAPID CITY - Rapid City's FOX 100.3 FM will be the broadcast home of all regular season and playoff games when the Rapid City Rush plays its inaugural season in the Central Hockey League starting this fall.
The team's first games will be on the road until a new hockey arena at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center is completed in December, but Rush general manager Jason Rent hopes that fans attending home games will tune in.
"We want people to listen to the radio, because that will help educate them about the sport of hockey," Rent said. "Our play-by-play guy is going to be very educated in the sport. If people will listen even for 10 minutes or so during a game, they'll pick up on the rules and things like that."
Rent is working with the CHL and the radio voice of the NHL's New York Islanders to find an announcer.
"It's the most sought-after job in professional hockey," he said. "It's one thing to have a good voice, but you've got to know the sport."
"We're thrilled to be involved in this for the community, our listeners and our advertisers," said Dan Larkin, director of programming and operations for The Fox's parent company, New Rushmore Radio of Rapid City.
"We're got some guys on staff that grew up playing hockey and are absolute freaks, like Jay Davis, our afternoon guy, who's from Minnesota and was born to play hockey. That helps us a lot too," Larkin said.
