KYLE - Top-ranked Red Cloud had four players score in double figures as the Crusaders built an early lead then held off a furious fourth-quarter comeback by Little Wound before posting an 86-76 boys basketball win Thursday.
Red Cloud owned a 72-47 lead after three quarters, only to see the Mustangs close to within 10 by game's end.
Christian McGhee scored 17 points to lead the Crusaders. Carl Swallow followed with 15 points, Billy Scott had 14 and Lester Gotheridge 12 for Red Cloud, which got points from 11 players.
Brice Hornbeck knocked down all six of his 3-pointers in the second half on his way to scoring 40 points. Hornbeck scored 32 of his 40 points after halftime.
Casey Montileaux hit a pair of 3s and finished with 12 points.
Sully Buttes 69, Miller Area 57
ONIDA - Four players scored in double figures as
No. 3-ranked Sully Buttes defeated Miller Area 69-57 in boys basketball action.
Ryan Yackley and Zach Merwin led the Chargers with 14 points apiece; Spencer Yackley added 12 and Brice Sutton 10. Grant Rediger paced the Rustlers with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Sully Buttes (8-0) travels to Hoven to face Hoven/Edmunds Central on Monday. Miller Area (3-5) hosts Northwestern today.
Timber Lake 75, Takini 44
TIMBER LAKE - Timber Lake jumped out to an 18-6 lead after a quarter and rolled to a 75-44 victory over Takini in non-conference boys basketball action.
Troy Lindskov scored 12 points to lead the winning Panthers. Jade Long came off the bench to chip in 11 points and reserve Dayton Takes The Knife followed with 10.
Justin Sitting Crow and Keiko Iron Hawk had eight points each to pace Takini.
Todd County 58, Chamberlain 50
CHAMBERLAIN - Mark DuBray scored a team-high 16 points as Todd County held off Chamberlain 58-50 in boys basketball.
The Falcons held a 27-15 lead at the half and 47-27 after three. The Cubs outscored the Falcons 23-11 in the final stanza, but couldn't make up the difference.
"It was a very close first quarter, back and forth, but we didn't take care of the ball in the second," Chamberlain coach Allan Bertram said. "We battled back in the fourth and forced some good turnovers, but we just ran out of time."
Joe Hieb paced the Cubs with 19 points and Wade Hickey added 12.
Chamberlain (4-4) travels to Bon Homme on Saturday. Todd County (9-1) hosts McLaughlin tonight.
WEST RIVER INVITATIONAL
WALL/NEWELL - Upton, Wyo., won a back-and-forth battle with Rapid Christian 53-44 and three players scored in double figures as Wall defeated Edgemont 65-44 in the opening round of the West River Invitational on Thursday.
Christian led 7-4 after the first, but trailed 22-16 at halftime and 31-29 after three.
Matt Lugee paced Upton with 21 points and Hyrum Booth scored 15. Justin DiBona scored a game-high 30 points including six 3-pointers to lead the Comets.
In the second game, Wall held a 29-21 advantage at the half and opened the lead to 48-34 heading into the final stanza.
Sid Geigle paced the victors with 18 points; Darick Eisenbraun added 12 and Joe Besson netted 11.
Aaron Mower scored a team-high 14 points for Edgemont and Josh Barker added 13.
In other action in Newell, Moorcroft defeated New Underwood 61-56 and Newell defeated Faith 50-47. Further details were not available at the Journal's deadline.
GIRLS GAMES
Bennett County 64, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 59
MARTIN - In a battle of ranked teams, Bennett County edged Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 64-59 in a girls basketball game Thursday night.
The 10th-ranked Braves led 18-13 after the first quarter, but the undefeated Lady Warriors outscored Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 19-10 to lead after two quarters 32-28.
Bennett County, ranked third in Class A, outscored the Braves by one point in the second half en route to the five-point victory.
The Lady Warriors were led by Keely Krolikowski who drained three 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 19 points. Cara Kratovil and Shawna Evans scored 12 points each.
Jessica Keckler led the Braves with 18 points, while Lacey Leaf chipped in 11 points and Nadia Watt added 10.
Bennett County (10-0) hosts Winner on Tuesday and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (7-3) plays Red Cloud Saturday night at home.
South Central 59, Gregory 38
GREGORY - South Central forced 36 turnovers en route to a 59-38 win over Gregory in a girls basketball game Thursday night.
The Lady Cougars led 15-9 after one quarter and 27-15 after at intermission.
"We were right there with them in the first half despite 19 turnovers," said Gregory head coach Lonnie Klundt. "The third quarter was kind of the deciding factor."
South Central increased their lead over the Lady Gorillas to 22 points after outscoring Gregory 21-11 in the third quarter.
Steph Warnke led the Lady Cougars in scoring with 16 points. Cheyenne Lambley and Mandy Baxa each added 13 points for the winners.
Gregory's Melissa Petersen finished with a double-double, scoring 11 points and hauling down 12 rebounds.
The Lady Cougars hit 49 percent of its shots compared to 32 percent for Gregory.
Gregory (1-8) travels to Chamberlain on Monday.
Kadoka 56, Philip 42
PHILIP - Maria Herber scored 23 points to lead Kadoka to a 56-42 girls basketball win over Philip Thursday night.
Philip trailed by just four at the half, but a 21-12 advantage for kadoka in the third quarter proved to be the difference.
Whitney Antonsen and Sammi Berry shared top rebounding honors for Kadoka with 11 boards each. Berry also added 17 points for Kougars.
Marrisa Mann and Kenzy Pinney each scored 12 for Philip.
Sully Buttes 61, Miller Area 52
ONIDA - Alexis Yackley's 24 points led undefeated Sully Buttes to its 10th win of the year, a 61-52 triumph over Miller Area on Thursday night in Onida.
Kylee Lamb added 19 points and Elizabeth Lamb 12 for the Chargers, top ranked in girls Class B basketball this season.
Yackley and Elizabeth Lamb each had eight assists for Sully Buttes.
Miller Area, 7-2, was led by Amanda Mentzer's 17 points. Kate Lingscheit had 10 for the Rustlers.
Harding County 85, Tiospaye Topa 36
BUFFALO - Six players scored in double figures as Harding County rolled to an 85-39 win over Tiospaye Topa Thursday night in girls basketball action.
"We played really good defense to start the game," said Harding County head coach Josh Page. "We pride ourselves on defense and really took them out of their game."
The Ranchers, ranked No. 9 in Class B girls basketball, were led by Samantha Jensen's 15 points and 13 rebounds. Joey Painter and Kaycee Nelson each added 14 points. Krista Slaba, Amanda Jenson and Devan Koch finished with 12 points apiece.
Melissa Swan and Jo Miner each scored eight points for the Thunderhawks.
Harding County (7-1) travels to Timber Lake and Tiospaye Topa (2-6) hosts Lemmon in LaPlant on Saturday.
