Alexandra Rogers, 9, and Hunter Widvey, 10, both struck gold in the sixth annual National Showcase held at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The U.S. Figure Skating competition, hosted by the Broadmoor Skating Club, took place Aug. 13 through Aug. 15 and included more than 190 skaters from all over the country and even Europe. The National Showcase is a venue that focuses specifically on the artistry in figure skating. All competitors had to qualify just to participate by earning a top-four finish in a prior competition.
Rogers and Widvey, both members of the Black Hills Figure Skating Club, competed in three different events. Each earned first place in one of their primary rounds of competition and both girls made it to the championship rounds in two of their three events.
Both girls won top spots in the final standings of one event in the championship round with Widvey earning silver in preliminary dramatic entertainment, and Rogers earned a bronze in preliminary light entertainment.
Whitehead to be at MMA show
Mike Whitehead, a Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran, will be the Rapid City show Vindication later this month.
Whitehead, who has also fought in Affliction and Strikeforce, will be hosting an MMA seminar during his stay in Rapid City.
The Eminent Domain Productions produced show is scheduled for Sept. 26 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
Logan featured in ESPN.com article
PITTSBURGH - Former University of South Dakota football star Stefan Logan is featured in an article on espn.com.
Veteran writer Len Pasquarelli wrote the article on Logan and how he has been a good fit for the Steelers as a kick returner.
Logan, who played at USD from 2003 until 2006 and is the Coyotes' all-time leading rusher, has enjoyed a big preseason returning kicks and punts for the defending Super Bowl Champion Steelers, who conclude the preseason tonight against Carolina.
In addition, Logan was also featured in an article on the Pittsburgh Steelers' Web site.
Four DWU squads honored
MITCHELL - Recently the NAIA handed out NAIA Scholar Team awards for the 2008-2009 academic year, and four Dakota Wesleyan University squads were among the record 837 to receive the honor.
The Tiger women's golf, men's golf, women's basketball and volleyball teams all received the NAIA's top scholastic team honor. The women's golf team led the DWU squads with a 3.59 team grade point average. The men's golf team turned in a 3.32 team GPAC. The women's basketball team had a GPA of 3.30 and the volleyball team had a 3.25 GPA.
