GILLETTE, Wyo. - The South Dakota girls all-star team needed to make something happen.

It was getting bruised and battered.

It simply couldn't get over the hump Friday night against the Wyoming girls all-star team in a physical matchup in Gillette, Wyo.

There was nothing left for South Dakota players to do, but get a little physical themselves. And if this game was any indication, Saturday's rematch in Spearfish should be a doosy.

South Dakota rallied back in the fourth quarter and squeezed out an extremely rough-and-tumble 84-79 win. The two teams meet again tonight at 5:30 p.m.

"It was brutal and just wide open," said Bennett County head coach Jeff Krolikowski, who led the S.D. squad. "It was a tough game to get in sync with. We just started adapting and we kind of came back with (physical play).

"It was a good, even match. I had to actually do a little coaching tonight."

The original game plan revolved around the guard play of Parkston's Maggie Malloy and Bennett County's Keely Krolikowski, Jeff's daughter. But when the shooters went cold in the third quarter, South Dakota had to step up the defense.

"That is all-star girls basketball," said Keely, noting she expected intense play. "We talked about our defense and getting on our players."

The refocus on 'D' worked to stymie a Wyoming bunch that was clicking along with four-point cushion, 61-57, entering the fourth quarter.

In the boys game, the Wyoming all-star team put on a clinic in 3-point shooting Friday night in a lopsided showdown against the South Dakota all-stars

Wyoming drained 20 triples with six of its eight players getting in on the action and blitzed South Dakota 127-84 in Gillette, Wyo., setting a record for most points in the 16th annual clash.

Custer's Issac Parsons and Red Cloud's Lester Gotheridge paced South Dakota with 17 points each. Rapid City Central's Evan Sims had 16 and St. Thomas More's Nathan Jacobson added 15.
