SPEARFISH - Spearfish swept all six singles matches and won two of three doubles matchups, defeating Sturgis, 8-1, in the season-opening boys tennis dual for both teams at the Spearfish High School tennis courts on Saturday.
Winning singles matches for the Spartans were Josh Knutson, Todd Tan, Alex Bakuta, Alex Reid, Ryan Lapov and Jordan Edwards. The doubles teams of Knutson-Tan and Edwards-Landon Langer were victorious for Spearfish.
The Sturgis doubles duo of Eric Teachout and Bennett Prosser won their No. 2 doubles match.
"It was a great kickoff to our season," Spearfish coach Doug Dexheimer said. "I was pretty satisfied. Their was good play by both teams. Sturgis was missing some players, and we were missing some players."
Spearfish hosts St. Thomas More on Tuesday.
