Area Scene: Leuthold an All-American for the Huskers

RAPID CITY - Black Hawk native Cassie Leuthold, a sophomore at Nebraska, was recently named as a first-team All-American by the National Ten Pin Coaches Association.

Leuthold led not only the Husker team but the NCAA with a 205.7 season average, claimed two tournament titles, finished first in the NCAA Championship individual standings with a 216.75 average, and had four top five finishes and five top 10 finishes.

Leuthold earned the prestigious honors after leading the NCAA with a 205.7 average over 57 games. Leuthold helped guide the Huskers to their fifth-consecutive NCAA championship berth.

Amateur baseball memory books now available

VOLGA - A book celebrating the history of South Dakota amateur baseball is now available.

The 133-page book is a compilation of pictures, stories and archives about the history of amateur baseball from 1933 to present.

Proceeds from the sale of this book go to South Dakota Coaches Against Cancer.

YMCA hosting benefit golf tournaments

RAPID CITY - The Rapid City YMCA will be hosting its annual youth golf tournaments to benefit The First Tee.

The tournaments are for boys and girls, ages 8 to 14 and will be held at LaCroix Links Golf Course. There will be divisions for all that participate and the entry fee to participate is $10. The tournament will be either a 9-hole or 18-hole stroke play event with no handicaps. Prizes will be available for the winners. Some hole prizes will be given out and lunch will be served as well.

The tournaments will be today, July 9 and July 23. Starting times will be 10 a.m. for boys and girls ages 12 to 14, 10:30 a.m. for boys and girls ages 9 to 11 and 10:45 a.m. for boys and girls ages 8 and under.

Rushmore Cup slated for this weekend

RAPID CITY - The Rushmore Soccer Club will host its annual Rushmore Cup Tournament beginning Friday through Sunday in Rapid City.

There will be teams, ranging in age from U-10 to U-19, from eight states represented.

Hoops tournament draws 64 teams from nine states

SIOUX FALLS - The 8th Annual Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball Dakota Showcase tournament is set for Thursday through Saturday in Sioux Falls. The tournament will feature 32 boys and 32 girls high school summer teams from nine states.

More than 120 NCAA Division II, III, NAIA and junior college coaches are expected to scout the event. Division I coaches are not allowed to attend summer events until July 6.

"The biggest testament to the talent in the event are the number of college coaches that will be in the stands this weekend," said tournament director Doug Koster, of Kearney, Neb. "Both divisions are full of future college players."

The event begins with pool play on Thursday and Friday. Based on pool play results, teams are seeded in single-elimination brackets for Saturday. Games start at 8 a.m. MDT each day and run until 10 p.m. MDT. The championship games are Saturday evening at 7:40 p.m. All games are played at the Elmen Center.

"This is one of the most competitive exposure events in the Upper Midwest. The college coaches and fans are going to enjoy the talent on display this weekend," Koster said.

USF men's basketball coach Murphy resigns

SIOUX FALLS - Shane Murphy, the all-time winningest coach in University of Sioux Falls men's basketball history, has resigned from his post, the school announced Monday at a press conference.

USF Director of Athletics Willie Sanchez said the school will look to name a new coach as quickly as possible.

Murphy, 37, was the Cougars head coach for the past seven seasons. Under his tutelage, the Cougars tallied a record of 154-77 (84-38 GPAC) and a winning percentage of .666.

Murphy led USF to the NAIA National Tournament four times, including a trip to the NAIA Final Four during the 2003-04 season. He is 84-18 all time at home in the Stewart Center.

"I appreciate what Shane has done for the men's basketball program at USF," Sanchez said. "Shane and his staff have worked very hard to produce teams that were competitive nationally and within the GPAC. I join all Cougar supporters in wishing Shane and his family the best in the future."
