SPEARFISH - The Black Hills State women and Dickinson State men earned repeat honors as the team champions at the Dakota Athletic Conference indoor track and field meet Saturday at the Young Center.
The Lady Yellow Jackets won their fourth consecutive DAC crown totaling 203 points. Jamestown College claimed runner-up honors with 169, followed by Dickinson State with 151. South Dakota Mines was sixth with 26.
"It doesn't get any easier," said BHSU coach Scott Walkinshaw. "Our conference was very competitive. Our outstanding seniors - Aubrey Baxter, Amber Brodersen, Alicia Verhulst, Shelli Scheffler, Jamie Adams and Rose Hunter - came through big. Some of these girls have been a part of four consecutive championships. Their leadership was really big."
BHSU competed without all-American Shannon Hellman, who sat out the meet because of an injury.
"Without Shannon, that put a little more importance on other people's performances," said Walkinshaw.
Aubrey Baxter capped her final indoor home meet by earning firsts in the weight throw and shot put.
"I wanted to came out and get a PR (personal record) in both events," said Baxter.
The Redfield senior is the NAIA national leader in the weight throw and shot put.
Wendy O'Lexey got the
BHSU women off to a good start Friday, winning the 5,000-meter run. Lisa Koch notched a second-place performance in the pentathlon.
Verhulst clocked the best time of 10 minutes, 37.89 seconds in the 3,000-meter run Saturday. The BHSU foursome of Nikki Shinkle, Hunter, Kaila Ivers and Kayla Ferguson teamed up for first place in the 4-by-400-meter relay.
Dickinson State was a runaway winner in the men's division with 287 points. BHSU captured second place with 118, Jamestown College took third place with 84 and South Dakota Mines finished sixth with 43.
"Dickinson State is just so strong on the men's side," said Walkinshaw. "We don't have a lot of depth."
Ramon Miller was a double winner for the Blue Hawks, claiming firsts in the 200- and 400-meter dashes.
BHSU's Cody Bordewyk had a busy day for the Yellow Jackets. The Livermore, Colo., senior, won the one-mile run and 3,000-meter run and took second place in the 800-meter run.
"I managed to compete pretty well. I was happy with that," said Bordewyk. "I went out pretty slow in the first half of the mile. It was a tough race. I felt pretty good in the 3K.}
Bordewyk has won three straight 3,000-meter titles at the DAC meet.
Jason Boeding swept the men's weight throw and shot put titles. Teammate Cole Nicholas claimed a second- place performance in the weight throw.
Laine Parish topped the 5,000-meter competitors on Friday.
Mines coach Jerry Schafer was pleased with the performance of the Hardrockers.
"The kids really competed well," he said. "We exceeded the point total I thought we would get. Everybody stepped up. Our relays placed much higher than I thought we would."
Brittney Hovdenes collected second place in the women's 5,000-meter run, and Madi Lane finished third in the high jump.
"Lane and Ashley Stewart got us points in the high jump. Ashley Kemnitz gave us some points in the hurdles," Schafer said.
On the men's side, Matt Pike finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run for Mines. Matt Deardoff took fourth place in the shot put, Colton Reid and Lucas Fried claimed fifth places in the 800-meter and one mile run, respectively.
Everett Brill collected sixth- place efforts in the weight throw and shot put. Jason Simmons was seventh in the 55-meter dash.
