RAPID CITY - The South Dakota Mines men's basketball team went ballistic from long range in the second half of its game against Haskell Indian Nations on Friday night to come-from-behind and win their game at the US Bank Thanksgiving Classic

97-86 at Goodell Gymnasium.

The Hardrockers knocked down 10-of-11 3-pointers in the second half to finish the game 15-for-21 from deep. Mines shot 62 percent from the floor on the night - including a ridiculous 83 percent (19-for-23) in the second half.

"That was the difference in the game, obviously," Haskell head coach Ted Juneau said of the Hardrockers' hot shooting. "We knew coming in that we had to try to make some things happen (defensively) inside. We knew who their shooters were, but it seemed like they found about three others."

The Hardrockers got yet another impressive long-range firing display from guard A.J. Trennepohl. The sophomore from Lubbock, Texas knocked down 5-of-7 3-pointers in the first half before hitting three huge momentum-changing triples in the second half to finish 8-of-12 from the floor (8-for-10 from 3-point range) with a game-high 28 points. Trennepohl's eight 3-pointers was just one off the school record of nine set by Mitch Slusarski in a game against Dakota State during the 1990-91 season.

"That's one thing that we know he can do," Mines head coach Jason Henry said of Trennepohl. "He's just a sophomore but he's proven that if you give him open looks he'll make you pay."

The Hardrockers may not have received huge numbers from their frontcourt players on the night, but the Mines big men got the Haskell defense to collapse often enough that it paved the way for a big night by the 'Rocker perimeter players.

"We started inside and got some double and triple teams that really opened it up for everybody," Henry said. "That freed up our outside guys, and while you still need to knock down the shots it's a lot easier to knock them down when you do some of that work prior to taking them."

Things looked rough for the Hardrockers in the first half as Haskell's overall speed and athleticism seemed to get to Mines just a bit, but the Hardrockers came out in the second half with renewed defensive intensity to wipe out a 44-39 halftime deficit in the first couple of minutes.

"We can surprise some teams with our quickness," Juneau said. "We're a pretty good team when we feed off of our defense, but there's not much we could do when a team shoots like that."

Henry felt his team remained focused on getting to the rim in the second half despite the fact it seemed any perimeter shot it got off was going in. The Mines head coach saw that aggressiveness as a major key in the game.

"Sometimes that can be a little bit of fool's gold," Henry said of getting hot from the outside. "We stayed aggressive and got to the free throw line and got to seven fouls with 14 minutes left in the second half. I thought that was as big as anything in the game."

Mines (5-3 overall) will play against Peru State today at home at 5 p.m. Donny DeGooyer added 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting for Mines while Robbie Fedor and Brent Cass also hit double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Cass went 6-for-6 from the floor in just eight minutes of play.

Haskell (5-8) will play against Black Hills State today at the King Center at 3 p.m. Solomon Horse Chief scored 23 points to pace the Indians. Dan Brown and Ben Carry Water added 18 and 15 points, respectively. Dominic Tiger-Cortes was the only other Haskell player in double figures with 10.
