No. 1-ranked St. Thomas More-Rapid City Christian blanked Sturgis 7-0 in a non-power point game in girls soccer action Thursday in Sturgis.
Maria Gonzalez gave the Cavaliers its' first goal when she scored on an assist from Lauren Jaeger in the 14th minute.
Ali Gorder scored on a rebound off the goalie in the 21st minute, followed by goals from Taylor Dauwen and Gonzalez to give the Cavaliers a 4-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, STM continued their scoring with unassisted goals from both Gorder and Jaeger and another goal from Gonzalez to close out the game.
"We had some trouble scoring but worked on that some this week," said St. Thomas More-Rapid City Christian head coach Doug Noyes. "I was really happy from the success we had with that. It's tough in the middle of the season to keep the focus but we had a discussion about it and the girls took that to heart."
Sturgis head coach Dick Long elected to play some younger girls to give them a chance to get experience.
"Individually, I saw some good things, but collectively, we still have a lot of work to do," said Long. "Sophomore Ashley Rennes played a position she had never played before but stepped up to the challenge tonight."
St. Thomas More-Rapid City Christian (5-0-2 overall) travels to Belle Fourche on Saturday, while Sturgis (0-4-1) plays on the road at Sioux Falls Christian on Sept. 26 and Harrisburg on Sept. 27.
