RAPID CITY - Billed as "the best of the eight-second rides," the fourth-annual Marvin Garrett Roughstock Series is set to finish with the first of two performances tonight, with the finals Saturday at the Pennington County Events Center.
A strong contingent of rodeo World Champions and National Finals qualifiers will take to the Events Center indoor arena to decide series titles in saddle bronc, bareback and bull riding events.
Friday night will feature 16 contestants in each event competing in a "Wild Card" round.
The top 10 from this year's standings, joined by six 'wild card' challengers will vie for 12 slots for the semi-final 'Eliminator' Round. The top six will compete in the final round.
The Wild Card round is Friday, and both the Eliminator round and finals are Saturday. Both night's performances begin at 7 p.m.
J.J. Elshere of Quinn leads the saddle bronc standings by 28 points over Ryan Elshere of Elm Springs.
Marty Hebb of Eagle Butte, Red Lemmel of Faith and Brandon West of Philip round out the top five.
Scott Montague of Rapid City, Larry Sandvig, Weston Garrett of Belle Fourche, Dustin Luper of Black Hawk and Kelly Timberman top the bareback riding standings.
The dogfight is in the bull riding standings, with Aaron Brewer of Pierre leading Spearfish's Cole Herron by just two points (60-58) going into the final weekend.
Brian Curtis of Belle Fourche is five markers adrift of Herron in third, with Jason Hunsaker of Fairburn and Garrett Vig of Newell tied for fourth with 32 points each.
