Local Little League squad evens record before rematch with Iowa
It got a little interesting for the Harney Little League All-Stars, but the team advanced to the semifinals at the Central Regional Tournament with an 8-7 win over Missouri's Daniel Boone National Little League in Indianapolis on Wednesday.
Harney (2-2 overall) came into the top of the sixth inning with an 8-3 lead only to see Missouri score four runs aided by four Harney errors.
"Those four errors in the last inning made it real nerve-racking for me," Harney head coach Raye Bledsoe said.
Missouri (2-2) had the basses loaded and no outs before Harney's defense began to find its footing once again. Shortstop Dmitri Bledsoe showed good range tracking down a popup for the first out of the inning before Cody Carlson had the defensive play of the inning diving for a ball and snagging it in foul territory inches off the ground for the second out. Pitcher Tucker Berg would get the final out as he secured a popup between the mound and second base sealing the win.
"It was do or die for us," Raye Bledsoe said. "I just let the kids know we had to play our game today, and we finally started finding some holes to get some hits. We have had a lot of checks swings this whole tournament because we have been a little unsure, but they finally started swinging the bats."
Harney fell behind 3-0 after the first inning but was able to climb back into the game with two runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth to take the 6-3 lead.
P.J. Freidel went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored a run to lead the way for Harney.
"He laid down two key bunts and he drove in a run with another hit for us," Raye Bledsoe said. "That was a real big performance by our 11-year-old."
Berg went five-plus innings striking out four and walking just one to get the win for Harney.
The team will face Iowa at 8:30 a.m. MDT today in the first of two semifinal games pitting the second- and third-place teams against each other. Harney will have to do a better job of slowing down an Iowa attack that pounded out 14 runs in just four innings to win 14-0 on Tuesday.
"We have nothing to lose and we just have to let it all hang out," Raye Bledsoe said. "I just have to let them know that this is baseball and anything can happen. But we need to strike first because with the exception of our game today it seems like the team that scores first ends up winning these games."
