Sturgis' Rebekah Larson plans to keep busy in college. The senior recently signed her letter of intent to play both basketball and volleyball at Dickinson State University.
"I was looking at some bigger schools to play volleyball," Larson said. "But both basketball and volleyball coaches showed interest in me at Dickinson and so I decided to do it. They are a great staff and it just felt right."
Larson was an honorable mention all-conference player in the Greater Dakota Conference in both sports for the Scoopers this season. She will be playing for a basketball team that won the Dakota Athletic Conference title this year and advanced to the national tournament.
The volleyball team struggled this year after the Blue Hawks had a long history of success in the sport.
The basketball team's run to the national tournament certainly did not hurt in Larson's eyes.
"I definitely followed them and it made it a little easier to eliminate some other schools," she said.
Larson said she doesn't expect to have problems playing two sports and taking on a college workload in the classroom because the smaller classes will allow her to get the help she needs. The location of the school in Dickinson, N.D., was also ideal for Larson because she is still relatively close to home, and will make trips back to Rapid City and Spearfish when the Blue Hawks face South Dakota School of Mines and Black Hills State which allow her parents to still see her play.
"I can always do it for a year or two and if I decide it isn't working than I can just pick one," she said.
Larson said volleyball used to be her favorite sport but over the past two years basketball has caught up to the point she enjoys them both equally.
Larson plans on majoring in teaching and would also like to coach.
