DEADWOOD - Crow Creek managed to get 8 yards. Little Wound managed to get 8 points.

But it seemed like eight years before both teams managed either in the Little Wound Mustangs' 8-0 victory Saturday at the Prospector Bowl in Deadwood. In all, both teams were plagued with a total of 20 penalties for 145 yards, more yards than either team had in total yardage.

Both sidelines looked dejected late in the fourth quarter because either team hadn't scored.

"Every big play we had got called back," said Mustangs quarterback Jacey Mesteth. "Finally, it didn't get called back. I saw the freshman in the end zone, and I had to get it to him."

The touchdown strike finally came with less than six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Mesteth connected with freshman Angel Old Horse for a 24-yard touchdown, and Mesteth flipped into the endzone for a 2-point conversion.

Little Wound's defense had little problem handling Crow Creek. The Mustangs were able to limit the Chieftains to only two first downs, and it forced six fumbles and two interceptions. Little Wound had the better athletes from the start of the game. But when it came to scoring, the Mustangs just could not get the ball moving early or muster a big play without seeing a yellow flag.

Crow Creek could not move the ball, Little Wound barely did. One Little Wound drive started in the first quarter and lasted for 22 plays - more than a quarter. The drive was kept alive by two roughing-the-punter calls, and it ended on its own 47-yard line because of a fumble.

The Mustangs' big plays throughout the game were called back because of penalties. Mesteth threw two long strikes for big yardage, but both were called back because of ineligible receivers downfield. In the third quarter, a touchdown was taken off the board because of a forward lateral.

Despite the win, Mustangs' coach Darrell Hunter said his team has some work to do.

"We need to get back into our teamwork," Hunter said. "We're just lacking some discipline in some of our players."

"We have to get better before Todd County next week. We have to work on these penalties."

Little Wound's Mesteth and Spencer Roulliard led the game with 51 yards rushing. Mesteth also complete four passes for 30 yards. Old Horse was the game's leading receiver with one catch for 24 yards and the touchdown.

Crow Creek's Vilas Fallis Jr. completed five passes for seven yards and threw two interceptions.
