SPEARFISH - Less than 24 hours after playing stagnant in a loss to Rocky Mountain College, Black Hills State responded with a 92-80 win over Montana Tech in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday at the Young Center.

"We didn't have the stagnant offense we had yesterday," said BHSU coach Paul Sather. "Our guys kept their concentration. Going inside paid off for us."

Four Yellow Jackets reached double-figures in scoring. Cain Atkinson, a sophomore from Evanston, Wyo., topped all scorers with 29 markers. Atkinson downed

5-of-11 3-pointers in the contest. Atkinson's sophomore classmate, Will John Johnson, collected 21 points and snared 14 rebounds. Luke Enos and Parker Emerson netted 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Tony Trudnowski, who had15 points, led five Montana Tech scorers in double digits. Dirk Anderson canned 14, Josh Monagle 12, Brian Davison 11 and James York 10.

Spencer Childress' trey upped the Stingers' lead to

38-29 at the 4:11 mark of the opening half. The Orediggers from Butte, Mont., answered with back-to-back trifectas. York's three-ball pulled the visitors to within 41-40.

A 3-pointer by Atkinson and an inside hoop by Enos restored a 46-40 edge for the Jackets. BHSU held a 46-44 halftime lead.

A.J. Fodness connected on a bucket, handing the hosts a 58-49 advantage with 14:31 remaining.

The Orediggers sliced the deficit to four points. Monagle's basket pulled Montana Tech to within four at 60-56.

BHSU met the challenge, running off nine straight points. Atkinson fueled the points flurry with seven points.

"We did a better job guarding No. 2 (Trudnowski)," said Sather. After sinking 5-of-6

3-pointers in the initial 20 minutes, Trudnowski was limited to only a field goal attempt in the second half.

"Cain had a tremendous second half," said Sather. "Luke Enos had five offensive boards in the game. Will John Johnson is averaging 12-13 boards a game. He just doesn't give up on plays.

"Tonight was a good sign of offensive improvement. Our guys showed up with a sense of purpose."

BHSU (3-1 overall) looks to avenge its only loss of the season, visiting Rocky Mountain College on Tuesday.
