STURGIS - Two Sturgis boys golfers shot better than 40 Monday afternoon as the Scoopers edged Lead-Deadwood 175-180 in a dual at Lead Country Club. Sturgis was originally set to host the event.
Kyle Kopplin carded a nine-hole 38 en route to medalist honors. Clay Kopplin, with a 39, finished second in the individual race.
Tate McVay and Alan Roth each contributed a 49 to the Scooper cause. Zac Smith (53) and Sawyer Mathiesen (59) followed.
Lead-Deadwood was paced by Zach Fox, who shot a 40 and finished third. Grant Bellet (43), Jordan Smith (48), Gabe Dirksen (49), Dakotah Simpson (51), and Cas Bowman (57) also represented the Golddiggers.
Garrett Mack, with a 58, turned in the low score for the Lead-Deadwood junior varsity.
"I was just pleased that we were able to host the meet because of yesterday's weather, and the conditions were good," Lead-Deadwood head coach Joan Rachetto said. She added it's good to get to another event, and the Golddiggers are looking forward to their next two events.
"Our scores have been up our last two meets," Rachetto continued. "We need to come down with our scores to be competitive."
The Scoopers will compete in two eastern tournaments this weekend: Friday's Yankton Invitational and Saturday's Brookings Invitational. Lead-Deadwood, meanwhile, will compete in a Tuesday dual in Spearfish and travel to Custer on Friday.
