SPEARFISH - The Black Hills State University football team is coming off a thrilling last-second 21-14 victory over NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State University, and is looking to carry that momentum into its home opener against Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

The victory garnered the

No. 18 Yellow Jackets plenty of attention, but BHSU head coach John Scott is looking for sustained success.

"The win felt good, but we want to make sure it is more than just a week," he said. "We don't want this to be a one time thing, we want them to want more."

The 15th-ranked Rangers opened their season with a loss, but quarterback Billy Barefield will give the Yellow Jackets plenty to worry about today. He ran for 83 yards and a score in the opener against Southwestern Oklahoma State and threw for 153 yards and had another touchdown through the air.

"He is very creative and can do a lot of things with his arm and his legs," Scott said. "It is a big difference from last week where the quarterback was always in the pocket. We are going to have to play our swarming defense, but not get caught cheating because if we do, he will throw right over the top of us and it will be six points."

The BHSU defense limited the Mustangs to just 192 yards of offense last week while recording three sacks.

Scott knows his team will get a strong test this week.

"From top to bottom on their roster the one thing that really stands out is they are very athletic," Scott said. "I don't think we will see a more athletic team top to bottom than Northwestern Oklahoma the rest of the season."

Offensively, Tanner Ehrlich got the job done on the ground for the Yellow Jackets grinding out 122 yards on 25 carries which opened up the passing game for quarterback Drew Hodgs in the fourth quarter. He threw for 212 yards and two scores including the winning touchdown to Jamie January with eight seconds remaining.

January may have had the biggest catch of the game, but Corey Wheeler was Hodgs' favorite target connecting on five receptions for 120 yards.

"We are still not out of preseason mode because that first game told us where we were," Scott said. "We still have a lot of our basic offensive and defensive things that we are still refining and working on."

Tailgating begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Young Center parking lot with the game to kick off at 1 p.m. at Lyle Hare Stadium.

MINES LOOKING FOR A 2-0 START: Coming off a 62-7 win to open the season against Haskell University, the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology football team turns its attention to Trinity Bible College.

The Hardrockers offense, which put up over 400 yards of offense in the opener, may be hard pressed to come close to those numbers as Trinity did not allow an offensive point in its 13-0 season-opening loss to Minnesota-Morris. The only points put up came off of interception returns for scores.

"They threw the ball a lot but weren't able to run it very well," 'Rockers head coach Dan Kratzer said of Trinity. "They will mix things up and be very aggressive on both sides of the football."

Trinity was held to minus-15 yards rushing against Morris while quarterback Justin Manning threw for 153 yards, but was picked off three times.

Mines was led by a pair of freshmen in quarterback Nick Russell and running back Jamie Dale. Mines' offense showed the ability to throw the ball effectively and get the running game going as well.

However, Kratzer would like to see his defense stiffen against the run.

"We need to get stronger against the run and maintain our consistency and not beating ourselves," he said. "We did a good job of that against Haskell and did not commit very many penalties."

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

EAGLES LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK: The Chadron State College football team opens its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule on the road at Adams State College. The 20th-ranked Eagles are coming off a loss to Pittsburg State snapping a 25-game regular season winning streak, but the Eagles still have an 18-game conference winning streak alive.

Adams State has opened the 2008 season with a pair of losses, but freshman Stephen Baca had a strong showing in the Grizzlies' last game.

The Grizzlies rely on running back Oscar Murray and wide receiver Josh Gibson.

Chadron head coach Bill O'Boyle expects to see plenty of blitzing from the Adams State defense as the Eagles look to get more production on the ground after rushing for only 48 yards against Pittsburg State.

Eagles quarterback Joe McLain is coming off a big game through the air, recording 387 yards and four scores.

The Eagles will be without a pair of players on the defensive side of the ball due to injury. Safety Craig Kaiser and Eric Roth are both sidelined with injuries.

The game is set to kickoff at noon.
