Area Scene: Golf tourney benefits track and field program

SPEARFISH - The 8th Annual Mark Larscheid Memorial Golf Tournament will be July 5 at Spearfish Canyon Country Clubwith a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

The tournament is an 18-hole, scramble format with four-person teams in three divisions. The cost to participate is $90 per person and it includes cart, drink ticket, dinner, dance and team and pin prizes.

The proceeds benefit the Black Hills State University Track and Field program in the form of an annual Mark Larscheid Memorial Track and Field Scholarship.

A putting contest, hosted by the BHSU Track and Field and Cross-country teams, will also be at 11:30 a.m. on the day of the tournament.

Adult tennis leagues beginning this week

RAPID CITY - Adult tennis recreation leagues are starting this week at Sioux Park.

The leagues are sponsored by Black Hills Tennis Association in conjuction with Rapid City Parks & Recreation Department.

On Monday night, the mens league is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. On Tuesday, the womens league is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The ladies league is from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday and the mixed doubles is Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The first session week of June 2 to July 3 costs $20. The second session week of July 7 to Aug. 14 costs $24.

Fees include prizes, court fees and organized matches. Black Hills Tennis Association members receive a $3 discount on leagues. For more information or to register, call 343-6386.

Scholarships available through tennis association

RAPID CITY - Youth tennis scholarships are available from Black Hills Tennis Association for city recreation tennis programs.

Scholarship forms are available at the Rapid City Parks and Recreation office and the Sioux Park tennis courts.

Scholarship applications for the first session should be submitted by Friday. Applications should be submitted to Jeff Richardt at the parks and recreation department or Jason Olson at the Sioux Park tennis courts.

Sagen to play at Junior Nationals sports festival

RAPID CITY - Rapid City Stevens senior Taylor Sagen has been invited to participate in the USA Junior Nationals International Sports Festival on July 21-27 in Columbus, Ohio.

Sagen earned the trip after his performance in the USA Junior Nationals all-state high school basketball competition at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. The senior averaged more than 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks per game at the competition.

USA Junior Nationals provides one of the top amateur competitions in the United States and offers its program to all athletes who want to develop their basketball skills and techniques through statewide, national and international competition.
