RAPID CITY - Belle Fourche's Cordelia Bowman and Sturgis' Kyle Kopplin made their first-day leads stand on Tuesday in the second and concluding round of the SDGA Junior Invitational at the Golf Club at Red Rock.
Bowman, the girls 16- to 18-year-old age division winner, shot an 86 for a two-day total of 171 , which was five shots better than runner-up Danielle Kerr, of Rapid City. Brianna Dodge, of Sturgis, finished third with a two-day total of 182.
Kopplin captured the boys 16-to-18 title with a second successive 77 and two-day total of 154, five shots better than runner-up Brogan Pappel, of Rapid City, who fired a 72 on Tuesday, easily the best round of the day.
Bowman was pleased with her play on Tuesday.
"I played better than yesterday certainly. I struck my irons a lot better, and though my putting was a little off, my short game was OK. I chipped it on 14 from about 25 yards and made a pretty good putt on No. 4 for another birdie. On this course, the short game is the key to playing well, and I was able to do that fairly well."
Kopplin felt his game was suited to the course and conditions Tuesday as he attempted to nurse home the five-shot advantage he carried into the day's action.
"I didn't take a lot of chances today," he said. "Risk-reward is what I would call it. On a golf course like this if you take a big risk, you can get a big return, but you can also get heartbreak, whereas if you play conservative, you can shoot low numbers, and that was kind of my game play. To play well two days in a row on courses like these is a golfer's dream. I'm very satisfied."
As for runner-up Brogan Pappel, a Rapid City Stevens graduate who will be playing golf at South Dakota School of Mines this fall, the highlight of his even-par 72 was an eagle on the 355-yard
par-4 11th hole.
"I had a big drive, left myself about 20 yards short of the green and the chip hit the flagstick and went straight down into the hole," Pappel said. "I struck the ball well today and putted well too. I've been practicing a lot and am starting to get some results from it."
The low round of the day for the girls was posted by 16-year-old Kerr, who bounced back from a first-day 95 to card a sparkling 81. Kerr, who will be a junior this fall at St. Thomas More, credited course knowledge as a big factor for her low score.
"This is my home course," she said. "I live on 11 so I play this course a ton, so I feel like I might have had an upper hand since this course is all about placement."
Kerr obviously swung the golf club pretty well also as evidenced by the results of her play.
"On 16, I reached the par-5 in two, which I haven't done before, and I birdied that hole. And then on 18, I boomed my drive about 30 yards to the green so that
was definitely a nice way to finish."
It was a good tournament, said SDGA Junior Golf director Julie Jansa.
"The kids did really well with their pace of play, which always makes me happy and their attitude, as always, has been phenomenal," Jansa said. "Throughout the whole tour I run, the kids are generally so well-behaved in general, and when you bring in the elite of the elite, they always demonstrate what all golfers should be like."
The next stop on the SDGA Junior summer tour will be the Avera/Austad's Junior Tour stop at Meadowbrook Golf Course on Monday.
