SIOUX FALLS - Phil Wright scored five touchdowns in four different ways to lead O'Gorman to a 41-7 win over Sturgis in the Class 11AA quarterfinals Monday night at McEneaney Field.

One has to wonder what Wright might have done had he been feeling well.

O'Gorman's senior standout, who had been battling a stomach virus the past couple of days, had two touchdowns on the ground, one through the air, one by punt return and still another on an interception. His night, which ended shortly after halftime, ensured the Knights will host Washington on Saturday in the semifinals.

It was the second win in less than a month for O'Gorman over Sturgis. On Oct. 10, also at home, the Knights won 48-0.

"I was worried we might come out flat, but we didn't," O'Gorman coach Steve Kueter said. "I thought if we could come out and take care of business we would be okay. And we did."

The Knights (10-1 overall), who lost to Brookings a year ago at home in the quarterfinals, scored on their only two possessions of the first quarter. Senior quarterback Tony Viger capped a 9-play, 56-yard drive with a two-yard run, then Wright found the end zone with 2:48 left as O'Gorman looked firmly in control.

Wright's second score of the night came 51 seconds into the second period. Standing just inside his 30, the 192-pounder muffed Tyler Bertsch's punt, picked it up at the 29 and headed up the right sideline.

Wright appeared to be hemmed in near midfield, but eluded the Sturgis tacklers and sprinted untouched for the score.

Viger found Wright wide open for a 38-yard scoring play with 4:16 left in the quarter, then Wright closed out the first half by returning a Joey Olson misfire 76 yards for a touchdown with just three seconds left before the break.

Despite the spectacular performance, he wasn't perfect. Wright lost a pair of fumbles, though O'Gorman's defense didn't let the Scoopers capitalize.

"That has been my biggest problem, hanging on to the ball," Wright said. "I get a little loose with it. I've got to keep it high and tight."

Sturgis (6-5), bidding to reach the semifinals for the first time since 1995, avoided a shutout when Jacob Stygles scored on a 3-yard run with 9:17 to play.

Saturday's game with Washington will be the second time the Knights have played the Warriors this season. O'Gorman won the first time, 22-14.
