Two quick scores in the third quarter helped Winner pull away from a 21-21 halftime tie to escape Hot Springs with a 48-21 win on Friday in non-conference football action.
The Warriors took the second half kickoff and marched down the field, capitalizing on a 18-yard scoring pass from John Farner, who finished with four touchdown passes, to Braden Gardner. Hot Springs (3-3 overall) then went three-and-out on its next possession and on the punt, the Hot Springs punter inadvertently downed the ball at the Bison 35-yard line. Winner took advantage and scored a 48-yard run by Gardner.
"Two quick scores right away in the second half," Hot Springs head coach Ben Kramer said. "It was downhill from there. We had it in hand, had momentum, had everything going our way at halftime."
Hot Springs rallied from a 14-7 first-quarter deficit to tie the game at 21-21 on Brad Winn's 2-yard blocked punt return.
"We feel we let one get away," Kramer said. "It is gut-check time. We had a very good team on the ropes. We are definitely disappointed as a staff and a team. We have to learn to put people away."
Matt Harkless led the Bison with a 13-of-29 effort for 195 yards and a touchdown. Harkless also had four interceptions.
The Bison get back in action on Friday, traveling to Little Wound for another nonconference game.
Belle Fourche 50, C-EB 0: Belle Fourche remained undefeated with a
50-0 football win over Cheyenne-Eagle Butte on Friday.
Further details were not available at the Journal's deadline.
Both teams face conference foes next week. The Broncs (5-0 overall) host Black Hills Conference opponent Douglas and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (1-4) travels to Mission to face Big Dakota Conference foe Todd County.
Newell 56, Dupree 19: Tyler Mutchler passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more scores leading Newell past previously undefeated Dupree 59-19 in high school football Friday night in Newell.
Tyler Adams, Willy Woods and Brandon Fox all caught scoring passes from Mutchler, who finished with 166 yards passing.
Fox added a 56-yard scoring run and finished with 238 yards on 17 carries. Adams also scored on a 40-yard run.
Newell's Ronald Fickbaum added a
2-yard run and Taygen Schuelke finished out the scoring on a 65-yard romp in the fourth quarter.
No scoring information or statistics were provided for Dupree.
"It was a good night. We played pretty well, and we didn't have many breakdowns," said Newell coach Steve Schoenfish. "It was our homecoming, so it was pretty emotional for some of the kids."
Newell (2-3 overall) travels to Lemmon next week. Dupree (4-1) hosts Harding County Friday night in Dupree.
Lyman 58, Jones County 20: Logan Reuman threw three touchdown passes as Lyman rolled past Jones County 58-20 in a Western Great Plains football game in Presho.
Dusty Cole caught touchdown passes of 57 and 45 yards. Reuman found Shae McClanahan open for a 36-yard touchdown pass to end the first quarter up 22-0.
Dylan Madsen scored two touchdowns on runs of 69 and 50 yards. Reed Reuman returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown.
Dawson Jandreau and Skyler Eriksen each ran in a touchdown for the Raiders.
Tyler Buxcel scored twice for Jones County and Tryston Horsley crossed the goal line for the Coyotes' other score.
Lyman (5-0 overall) travels to Philip and Jones County (0-5) hosts Wall next Friday.
Colome 30, Kimball 16: Ben Kartak led Colome with 161 rushing yards and a touchdown as the Cowboys earned a 30-16 win over Kimball.
Zach Harter connected with Jake Luse to put the Cowboys on the board. Nathan Auddis and Ethan Vobr each added a touchdown.
"We did a very good job rushing (57 carries for 301 yards)," Colome head coach Kevin Graesser said. "Our line did a very good job against a very good football team. We need to get better on the line and keep improving week after week."
Kartak and Auddis led the defense with six tackles a piece. Jacob Debus made an interception for the Cowboys.
Trent Wookey and Colby Olson made Kimball's touchdowns.
Colome (3-2 overall) travels to South Central and Kimball (2-3) hosts Sunshine Bible Academy next Friday.
SUNSHINE BIBLE ACADEMY 41, MARTY INDIAN SCHOOL 0: Sunshine Bible Academy's defense held the Marty Indian School to just 69 yards of offense, rolling to a 41-0 rout of the Braves on Friday in prep football action.
Ethan McClain was 2-of-3 for 78 yards and two touchdowns, including a 62-yard touchdown to Travis Mader in the second quarter. McClain also hooked up with Preston Liebelt for a 16-yard touchdown. McClain also scored on a 23-yard run in the Crusaders' 28-point opening quarter.
Sunshine Bible Academy (4-2 overall) returns to action on Friday at Kimball, while Marty (1-4) plays at Andes Central.
Harding County 30, Wall 12: Jace Jenson scored two touchdowns as Harding County defeated Wall 30-12 in football action in Wall on Friday.
Jenson's first score was a 77-yard kick return to put the Ranchers on the board. His second came as a 17-yard touchdown pass from Austin Brown to seal the win.
Taz Olson and Trent Gress both had touchdowns for the visiting team.
Hazer Burghduff paced the Rancher offense with 54 rushing yards. Jenson made five catches in the game for 50 yards. Trent Turbiville led the defense with 13 tackles and two quarterback sacks.
Darick Eisenbraun put the Eagles on the board first with a 41-yard touchdown run. Calder Johnston, who led the home team with 82 rushing yards, found the end zone in the third quarter.
Wall's leading receiver, Colton Tines, had two catches for 68 yards. The Eagles rushed for 151 yards.
Wall (2-3 overall) travels to Jones County next week and Harding County (5-1) travels to Dupree.
MOORCROFT, Wyo., 34, SUNDANCE 6: Moorcroft, Wyo., scored the game's first 28 points on its way to a 34-6 rout of Sundance, Wyo., on Friday in prep football action.
Devin Wilson carried the ball 20 times for 122 yards and one touchdown, while Garrett Traylor added 10 carries for 114 yards and a score to lead Moorcroft. The Wolves finished with 410 yards of total offense.
The Bulldogs were held to 185 yards of offense in the loss. Hayden Johnston was 17-of-41 for 202 yards and one touchdown but finished with three interceptions.
